Yellowjackets fall at home to Johnnies

The Yellowjackets welcomed Saint John's University to the Yellowjacket Soccer Complex Sunday, putting their four-match winning streak on the line.  As pop duo Chad and Jeremy once told the world, all good things must end, someday.

It's a lesson the Yellowjackets have learned for the second time this season, as they watched their winning streak came to an end after the Johnnies defeated the Yellowjackets 2-1.
The hard-fought match was chippy from the beginning as there were 25 fouls and five yellow cards issued.

The match stayed physical, but the Yellowjackets appeared to have the advantage as they were outshooting the Johnnies 6-1.  Then, just like that the momentum shifted as the Johnnies scored on their second shot of the match to take a 1-0 lead at 35:28.  The physicality continued after the goal.  Saint John's got a little overzealous as Alex Schnobrich was issued a yellow card, the first of the match, at 40:03.

The second half was just as physical as the first with each team committing two fouls.  It was at this point that the officials decided it was time to break out the yellow cards on the Yellowjackets.  Adrian Leal (Alicante, Spain/IES Cabo de la Huerta) was issued the warning at 63:49.  Then 20 seconds later Joey Gustafson (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) was issued the Yellowjackets' second card of the match.

Ten minutes after Gustafson's yellow card the Johnnies scored again to make it 2-0.  The Yellowjackets wasted no time halving the Saint John's lead when Jonah Garcia (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) put a Harry Simpson (Derby, England/Derby Moor) feed into the back of the net at 78:14.

Unfortunately the Yellowjackets were unable to generate any offense after Garcia's goal as there were no shots for either team for the last 11:46 of the game.

The Yellowjackets outshot Saint John's 11-8 in the match.  Shots on goal favored the Johnnies 3-2.  Garcia and Reyman Solis (Kirkland, Ill./Huntley) had the shots on goal for the Yellowjackets.

Ben Wilhelm (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) started in goal for the Yellowjackets giving up two goals and making one save.  Wilhelm is now 9-3-0 on the season.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (10-3-0, 4-1 UMAC) is a match against UMAC foe Minnesota Morris.  Game time from the Yellowjacket Soccer Complex is set for 3:15 p.m.
