Yellowjackets Earn First Win

Yellowjackets 2, Saint Mary's 0

The Yellowjacket women's hockey team was back in action Saturday for their second game of a weekend series against Saint Mary's University. Fresh off of a stinging defeat Friday night, the Yellowjackets turned on the jets as they defeated Saint Mary's 2-0 for their first win of the 2015-16 campaign.

The first two periods saw a dominant Yellowjacket effort, as they outshot the Cardinal's 55-9. Unfortunately the Yellowjackets had nothing to show for it, as Cardinal goaltender Marah Shields turned away every shot.

The Yellowjackets were finally able to break through in the third period. With a Saint Mary's penalty about to expire, Emily Heid (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) scored her first of the season at the 4:41 mark of the period. Heid took the puck and fired a shot from the point through traffic that beat Shield over the right shoulder. Leah Elledge (Champlin Park, Minn./Champlin Park) assisted on the power play goal.

Just over a minute later, at the 5:47 mark of the period, Karen Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/Steinbach Regional Secondary) scored her first of the season. Larson's goal was pure hustle as she stole the puck at the Cardinal blue line, winning the foot race to the net beating Shield on the high side to seal a Yellowjacket victory.

The Yellowjackets dominated shots in this one, outshooting the Cardinals 81-13. They also won the face-off battle, holding a 33-28 advantage in face-offs won.

Sky Brown (Lenore, Manitoba/Virden Collegiate Institute) started in goal for the Yellowjackets, finishing with 13 saves in the shutout effort. Brown earned her first win of the 2015-16 season, as she is now 1-0-0 on the season.

Marah Shields started in goal for Saint Mary's, finishing with two goals allowed while making 79 saves. Despite the monumental effort by Shields, she falls to 0-1-0 on the season.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (1-1-0, 0-0-0 WIAC) is a home matchup Tuesday, November 3 against Gustavus Adolphus. Game time from Siinto S. Wessman Arena is set for 7:00 p.m.
