Turnovers Doom Yellowjackets Against UW-Stevens Point

Box Score

UW-Stevens Point 69, Yellowjackets 61

The Yellowjacket men's basketball team wasted little time to get acclimated for the 2015-16 season as they took on the defending national champion UW-Stevens Point Pointers Saturday. The Yellowjackets were looking to make a statement against a team that they nearly defeated in last season's final game.

Turnovers proved to be key, as the Pointers were able to hold off a second half comeback attempt to defeat the Yellowjackets 69-61.

The Yellowjackets fell behind early in this one, before storming back to take an 11-8 lead off of a Zach Schradle (Clayton, Wis./Clayton) layup. It was at this point that things started to come apart for the Yellowjackets, as the Pointers used three Yellowjacket turnovers to build a 21-13 lead. UW-Stevens Point pushed the lead to 34-18 with three minutes remaining in the half. The Yellowjackets managed to find some life to end the half, going on a 5-2 run to cut the deficit to 36-23 at the break.

The Yellowjackets came out strong in the second half, scoring the first three points of the half as a Schradle layup managed to cut the Pointers lead to 41-35 with less than 15 minutes remaining.  Unfortunately for the Yellowjackets, the early deficit proved too much to overcome as UW-Stevens Point never let the lead shrink to less than eight the rest of the way.

Schradle paced the Yellowjackets both offensively and defensively, where he led the team in scoring and rebounds with 24 points and 10 rebounds.

Brian Lindblom (Spooner, Wis./Spooner) added 15 points and six rebounds, while Nate Kalien (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls) had nine points.

The pointers were led by Stephen Pelkofer who had 20 points and 10 rebounds, leading the team in both categories.

Sean McGann had 18 points and five rebounds, while Ethan Bublitz had 10 points for the Pointers.

The Yellowjackets shot 45.7% from the field, while going 6-13 from beyond the 3-point arc. They also hit 13-20 free throws.

UW-Stevens Point shot 51.9% from the field, going 5-8 from beyond the arc while hitting 8-13 free throws.

The Yellowjackets committed 13 turnovers while the Pointers only committed five.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (0-1, 0-0 UMAC) is a matchup against UW-River Falls in day one of the Merrill Thompson Tip-Off Classic. Game time from Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium is set for 7:00 p.m.
