Yellowjackets Fall in WIAC Opener

The Yellowjacket women's hockey team was in action Friday night for the 2015-16 WIAC opener. Taking on UW-Eau Claire, the Yellowjackets were looking to start conference play out on a strong note. Things did not play out the way the Yellowjackets would have wanted, as they fell to the Blugolds 2-1.

After a scoreless first period, the Yellowjackets were able to get on the board in the second. Emily Heid (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) beat Blugold goaltender Paige Turner at the 16:15 mark of the second for her third goal of the season. Karen Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/Steinbach Regional Secondary) and Amanda Coey (Brandon, Manitoba/Crocus Plains) assisted on the even strength tally.

The Blugolds wasted little time evening up the score as Mariah Czech was able to get a shot past Yellowjacket goalie Sky Brown (Lenore, Manitoba/Virden Collegiate Institute) at the 17:10 mark to make it 1-1. Lexi Wilson assisted on the even strength goal.

The third period saw both teams generate strong scoring opportunities, but Brown and Turner were able to turn away every attempt. This changed at the 16:20 mark of the third when the Blugolds Holly Turnbull beat Brown for what turned out to be the game winner. Kelsey Rafferty assisted on the even strength goal.

Brown made her sixth consecutive start in goal for the Yellowjackets. She allowed two goals while making 20 saves in the loss, falling to 3-2-1 on the season.

Turner started in goal for the Blugolds, allowing one goal while making 19 saves.

The Yellowjackets were 0-1 on the power play. UW-Eau Claire was 0-2.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (3-3-1, 0-1-0 WIAC) is a rematch Saturday, November 14 against UW-Eau Claire at home. Game time from Siinto S. Wessman Arena is set for 2:00 p.m.
