Yellowjackets Unable to Overcome First Half Deficit

Box Score

UW-River Falls 67, Yellowjackets 55

Day one of the 6th Annual Merrill Thompson Tip-Off Classic saw the Yellowjacket men's basketball team take on former WIAC foe UW-River Falls to determine who would play in tomorrow's championship. Unfortunately for the Yellowjackets, they will not be playing in the late game tomorrow as they fell to the Falcons 67-55.

The Yellowjackets started out the game on a strong note, as they took an 11-5 lead off of a Zach Schradle (Clayton, Wis./Clayton) layup eight minutes into the game. UW-River Falls managed to cut the lead to 12-11, but the Yellowjackets went on another run, capped off by a Zach Schradle (Clayton, Wis./Clayton) steal and dunk, to push the lead to 16-11.

It all went downhill from there for the Yellowjackets, as the Falcons reeled of 17 straight points to take a 29-16 lead with 1:41 remaining in the half. A Marquise Slay (Detroit, Mich./Ferndale) 3-pointer cut the lead back down to 10. The Falcons Jon Christensen hit a layup in the waning seconds of the half, as the Yellowjackets went into the halftime break down 33-21.

The Yellowjackets struggled to put the ball in the basket in the first half, as they shot only 27.6% from the field, including 1-11 from beyond the 3-point arc. In contrast, UW-River Falls shot 42.9% from field in the first half.

The shooting struggles continued for the Yellowjackets in the second half as they tried to cut into the deficit. A Montroy Scott (Fridley, Minn./Columbia Heights) layup with 8:40 remaining cut the lead to 50-43, but the Falcons answered with another run to push the lead to 58-45 with 6:11 remaining.

Despite the struggles shooting the Yellowjackets fought until the end, as Schradle hit a 3-pointer with 1:26 remaining to cut the UW-River Falls lead to 61-55. The first half deficit proved to be too much to overcome, as the Yellowjackets fell to the Falcons 67-55.

Schradle once again led the Yellowjackets, finishing with 21 points, seven rebounds and five steals. He led the Yellowjackets in scoring and steals while sharing the lead in rebounding.

Brian Lindblom (Spooner, Wis./Spooner) was the only other Yellowjacket in double figures, as he finished with 15 points and five rebounds.

Vid Milenkovic (Zurich, Switzerland/DSB) finished with seven rebounds, tied for the team lead.

The Falcons had a balanced attack as four players finished in double figures. Garet Pearson finished with a team leading 17 points. Pearson also had six rebounds.

Jack Herum had 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Falcons, while Christensen finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds. C.J. Lewis finished with 10 points for the Falcons.

The Yellowjackets shot 36.7% from the field, going 3-18 from beyond the 3-point arc and 8-12 from the free throw line.

UW-River Falls shot 46.2% from the field, going 2-7 from beyond the 3-point arc and 17-28 from the free throw line.

Each team committed 13 turnovers in the game.

Day two of the Merrill Thompson Tip-Off Classic takes place Saturday, November 21 as the Yellowjackets (0-2, 0-0 UMAC) take on Valley City State University in the 5:00 p.m. game.
