Late Goal Gives Yellowjackets Tie

Anton Svensson scores against Marian.
Box Score

Yellowjackets 1, Marian 1 (OT)

After Friday night's whitewashing at home at the hands of St. Norbert, the Yellowjacket men's hockey team was looking to rebound Saturday, and in the process put an end to a three-game losing skid. Saturday's opponent, Marian University, is a team that the Yellowjackets have struggled against in recent history, losing the last three meetings.

Marian entered the game under .500 (2-3-2), but the record was deceiving, as they have beaten a pair of nationally-ranked teams and Friday night skated to a 3-3 tie against UW-Stevens Point, the No. 2 team in the nation.

It wouldn't be easy, but for the Yellowjackets, nothing has been of late.

The Yellowjackets once again started slowly, putting only two shots on goal in the first period, but when the dust settled they did enough to end the losing skid, rallying on a late goal to earn a 1-1 tie Saturday at Wessman Arena.

The teams went to the locker room scoreless after the first period, with Marian outshooting the Yellowjackets 10-2 in the frame. As the second period unfolded the Yellowjackets began to get their collective legs underneath them and started to generate more opportunities.

With the game nearing its midpoint, a defensive miscue gave the Sabres the first goal of the game.

Marian dumped the puck in the Yellowjacket zone and goaltender Bryce Fink (Tacoma, Wash./Keystone) came out to play the puck behind the net. He collided with one of his own players and the puck was turned over. Thomas Fazio was the recipient of the turnover, and from a wide angle buried the puck into a wide open net to give the Sabres the 1-0 lead at 8:51 of the second.

As the third period unfolded the Yellowjackets continued to close the gap in shots on goal and began generating better opportunities, but they continued to trail on the scoreboard. The Yellowjackets moved ahead in shots on goal midway through the period, and kept Marian shotless in the period until there was just over six minutes left. On the play Fink was forced to make his most spectaular save of the weekend to preserve the one-goal deficit.

Then with 4:23 to play in regulation Anton Svensson (Sodertalje, Sweden/Igelstavikens Gymnasium) got the puck in a goal mouth scramble and poked it home to tie the game at 1-1. For Svensson it was his team-leading sixth goal of the season and it snapped a team scoring drought of 138:30 going back to the game last Saturday at Hamline.

Things got interesting with under two minutes to go when Jordan Neduzak (Morden, Manitoba/Morden Collegiate Institute) was called for cross checking, forcing the Yellowjackets back to the penalty kill. The killers would close out regulation, and then kill the penalty off in overtime. Both teams had shots in the extra session, but neither could score the game winning marker.

Fink was solid once again in goal for the Yellowjackets, finishing the game with 22 saves. His record now stands at 1-2-2 on the year. At the other end Mike Baldwin was also solid, making 26 saves for the Sabres.

Marian took just two penalties for four minutes, while the Yellowjackets took four for eight minutes. Both teams went scoreless on the power play, Marian in three chances and the Yellowjackets in one.

The Yellowjackets (3-3-2, 0-0-0 WIAC) have a quick turnaround as they will play at home on the eve of Thanksgiving, with Hamline coming to town Wednesday, November 25. Game time from Wessman Arena is set for 7:05 p.m. and it can be heard live on 91.3 FM, beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45 p.m. If you are outside the local listening area tune in online through the iFan Sports Network. Jon Garver will have the call.
