Yellowjackets Fall at home to Hamline

Box Score

Hamline 3, Yellowjackets 1

The Yellowjacket men's hockey team was at home Wednesday looking for a win prior to the Thanksgiving holiday. They faced off against a familiar foe in the Hamline University Pipers, who the Yellowjackets played earlier in the season in a game they lost 5-4 in overtime.

Things did not play out the way the Yellowjackets would have like, as they fell to Hamline 3-1.

It appeared as though the Yellowjackets and the Pipers would go into the first intermission tied at 0-0, but that all changed in the final minute of the period. Hamline's Charlie Adams won a faceoff in the Yellowjacket zone that bounced off of Brandon Zurn to set up a one-timer for Garret Schmitz. Schmitz shot beat Yellowjacket goaltender Bryce Fink (Tacoma, Wash./Keystone) to give Hamline a 1-0 lead at 19:34.

The second period saw the Pipers push the lead to 2-0 with a goal in the final two minutes of the period. Holding the man advantage after a Viktor Sallhag (Vasteras, Sweden) minor for slashing, Brandon Zurn blasted one past Fink at 18:17 in the period. Charlie Adams had the assist on the goal.

The third period saw the Yellowjackets strike quickly to cut the Piper lead in half. Nik Kosman (Calgary, Alberta/Centennial) fed the puck to Sallhag, who passed the puck to Jimmy Hughes (Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial) below the crease. Hughes then fired a one-timer past the Piper goalie to make it 2-1 Pipers 3:21 into the period. The goal was the first of the season for Hughes.

The Yellowjackets had many scoring chances the rest of the period, but were unable to get any shots past Hamline goalie Justin Quale. Bryce Fink (Tacoma, Wash./Keystone) was pulled with 1:27 remaining in the game, but the Yellowjackets were only able to manage one shot with the man advantage.

Hamline sealed the game at 19:54 when Charlie Adams scored an empty net goal to make it 3-1. Brandon Zurn and Mitch McPhearson assisted on the goal.

Fink started in net for the Yellowjackets, allowing two goals while making 40 saves. He is now 1-3-2 on the season.

Quale started in net for Hamline, allowing one goal while making 31 saves.

The Yellowjackets were 0-1 on the power play. Hamline was 1-4.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (3-4-2, 0-0-0 WIAC) is their 2015-16 WIAC season opener Friday, December 4 when they travel to Menominie, Wis. to take on UW-Stout. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. The game can be heard live on 91.3 FM with the pre-game show at 7:05 p.m. Jon Garver will have the call.
