Yellowjackets Play to Hard Fought Tie

The Yellowjacket women's hockey team was in action Tuesday, when they hosted Gustavus Adolphus. Playing on sort rest following their two game weekend series against Saint Mary's, the Yellowjackets played their way to a hard fought tie.

The first period saw both teams play evenly matched hockey, as any scoring attempt was turned away. With the score still locked at 0-0 over halfway through the period, Gustavus' Katy Fuller was sent to the penalty box for hooking. The Yellowjackets used the advantage to take a 1-0 lead 12:32 into the period, when Abby Constant-Bercier (The Pas, Manitoba) was able to punch a shot past the Gustavus goaltender. Karen Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/Steinbach Regional Secondary) and Lynne Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba) assisted on the goal, which was Constant-Bercier's first as a Yellowjacket.

The Yellowjackets outshot Gustavus 12-7 in the first period.

After going into the intermission down 1-0, Gustavus wasted little time tying up the score in the second. Erica Power scored 0:11 into the period after she found a soft spot in the Yellowjacket defense, beating Yellowjacket goalkeeper Sky Brown (Lenore, Manitoba/Virden Collegiate Institute) short side. Gustavus took a 2-1 lead 17:14 into the period following a cross-checking call on Kelly Cockerill (Selkirk, Manitoba/Oak Park), as Kailyn Klein put a shot past Brown with only 0:23 second remaining in the power play.

Gustavus was able to find their legs in the second period, as they outshot the Yellowjackets 18-8.

The third period saw the Yellowjackets strike early to tie the game up at 2-2, when Leah Elledge (Champlin Park, Minn./Champlin Park) was able to find the back of the net for her first goal of the 2015-16 season. Maggie Cragg (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) and Mikayla Goodin (Andover, Minn./Andover) had the assists on the even strength. Gustavus did everything they could to retake the lead, but Brown turned away every opportunity as the two teams ended regulation tied at 2-2.

The Yellowjackets were outshot by the Gusties 12-6 in the third.

The overtime period saw scoring opportunities for both teams. In the end neither team was able to find the back of the net as the game ended 2-2
Brown started in goal for the Yellowjackets, allowing two goals and making 38 saves. She is now 1-0-1 on the season.
Lindsey Hibbard started in goal for Gustavus, allowing two goals and making 27 saves.

The Yellowjackets played to a 2-2 tie despite being outshot by Gustavus 40-29 in the match.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (1-1-1, 0-0-0 WIAC) is a trip to Hancock, Mich. Friday, November 6 for a weekend series against the Finlandia University Lions. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
