Yellowjackets Advance to UMAC Championship

The Yellowjacket men's soccer team hosted their first UMAC playoff game Wednesday afternoon, when they took on Minnesota Morris. The two teams matched up earlier in the season at the Yellowjacket Soccer Complex in a game the Yellowjackets shut out the Cougars en route to a 3-0 victory. The Yellowjackets were hoping for history to repeat itself.

The Yellowjackets dominated the first half as they looked to jump out to an early lead. Morris goalkeeper Cody Christ did his part to keep the game tied up at 0-0, turning away all Yellowjacket attempts. The Yellowjackets had a prime scoring opportunity in the 33 minute, but back-to-back Jon Bucklew (Somerset, Wis./Somerset) shots hit the post before Ryan Wisdom (Hayward, Wis./Hayward)'s follow up hit the crossbar.

The Yellowjackets went into the break with a 14 to 2 advantage in shots and a 5-1 advantage in shots-on-goal. Despite the one sidedness of the half, the score remained locked at 0-0.

The second half was more of the same, as the Yellowjackets dominated possession of the ball. This became a little heated early in the period as Reyman Solis (Kirkland, Ill./Huntley) was issued a yellow card at 48:45, then four minutes later Erik Boese (New Berlin, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) was issued a yellow card of his own.

Following the early yellow cards, the Yellowjackets tried to break the tie, but every opportunity was turned away by Christ and the Morris defense. Going into the 80 minute it appeared as though the game was going to go into overtime.

Daniel Kearns (Greenock, Scotland/Clydeview Academy) would have none of it, as he gave the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead at 80:57 on his third goal of the season. Kearns took a perfect cross from Joey Gustafson (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) and beat Christ bottom left, as the Yellowjackets held on to advance to the UMAC Championship.

The second half once again saw a dominant Yellowjacket effort as they outshot Morris 8-3 with a 3-1 advantage in shots-on-goal.

Ben Wilhelm (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) started in goal for the Yellowjackets, making two saves to secure his ninth shutout of the season.

Christ started in goal for Morris, allowing one goal and making seven saves in a valiant effort.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (16-5-0, 8-2-0 UMAC) is a trip over the bridge Saturday, November 7 to take on rival St. Scholastica for the UMAC Championship. Game time from Ordean Field at Duluth East High School is set for 12:00 p.m.
