Yellowjackets Defeat Augsburg in Overtime Thriller

Box Score

Yellowjackets 4, Augsburg 3

The Yellowjacket men's hockey team took on Augsburg College Friday night looking to start the season 3-0, which is something they haven't done since they started 4-0 in the 2006-07 season. Friday night was also significant in that it was the 2015-16 home opener for the Yellowjackets. The Yellowjackets did not disappoint the crowd of over 750, as they defeated Augsburg 4-3 in overtime.

The Yellowjackets and Auggies appeared to be evenly matched from the start, as both teams had plenty of scoring opportunities that were turned away. Anton Svensson (Sodertalje, Sweden/Igelstavikens Gymnasium) broke the deadlock when he netted his second of the season. The goal was set up by strong defense from the Yellowjackets when Ian Ecklund (Twig, Minn./Proctor) deflected an Augsburg pass to Daniel Litchke (Superior, Wis./Superior), who found Svensson at the right faceoff dot. Svennson was able to beat Auggie goalie Brad Jones glove side on the one-timer to give the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead 11:19 into the first.

Augsburg was able to strike back in the final minute of the first. On the power play following a Dylan Nelson (Clearwater, Minn./Annandale) minor, Augsburg's Nate Flynn dropped a pass to Corbin Chapman behind the Yellowjacket net. Chapman fired a centering pass to Mack Ohnsted, who went top shelf to beat Yellowjacket goalie Cory Simons (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) blocker side to tie the game 1-1 19:06 into the first.

The Yellowjackets were able to retake the lead 13:19 into the second. Eric Shand (San Dimas, Calif./San Dimas) carried the puck across the blue line, feeding Litchke in the right faceoff circle. Litchke sent a crossing pass to Ecklund, who fired a wrist-shot top shelf, blocker side to make it 2-1 Yellowjackets.

Once again Augsburg was able to tie it up. A dump from Augsburg's Chris Nuth was misplayed by Simons, allowing Eric Brenk to steal the puck. It was easy sailing from there for Brenk as he fired the shot into a wide open net to make it 2-2 17:03 into the second.

Just over two minutes later the Auggies took their first lead of the game. Eli May fired a shot from the left point that got tipped past Simons by Flynn, making it 3-2 Augsburg 19:29 into the second. Just like that all the energy that the fans had brought to the building seemed to evaporate.

The Yellowjackets were not ready to just roll over and accept defeat. They had already seen the Auggies come back twice in the game to tie it up, so it was just a matter of time before they would get the chance of their own.

That chance came just over the half-way point of the third period when Augsburg's Drew Anderson was assessed a minor for tripping. The Yellowjackets were able to capitalize on the power play when Nik Kosman (Calgary, Alberta/Centennial) dropped a pass to Owen Stauber (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown), who went cross ice to find fellow Viktor Sallhag (Vasteras, Sweden). Sallhag then fired a wrister through traffic that was able to find the back of the net, tying the game up 3-3 12:38 into the third.

That score would remain tied up the rest of regulation, as the Yellowjackets and Auggies headed into overtime.

The overtime period saw Svensson play the hero as he netted his second goal of the game, and third of the season, at the 1:30 mark to give the Yellowjackets the victory. The game-winning-goal was set up when Litchke was able to find Ecklund in the right faceoff circle. Ecklund then carried the puck across the slot and left a perfect drop pass for Svensson, who's one-timer beat the Auggie goalie blocker side to the delight of the crowd.

Simons earned his second win of the season, as he allowed three goals while making 34 saves. Simons is now 2-0-0 on the year. Jones got the start for the Auggies, allowing four goals while making 24 saves.

There were 10 penalties called in the game. The Yellowjackets were called for six for 12 minutes. Augsburg were whistled four times for eight minutes. The Yellowjackets were one for three on the power play. Augsburg was one of five.

The Yellowjackets (3-0-0, 0-0-0 WIAC) are back in action Saturday to take on the University of St. Thomas. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m. The game can be heard live on 91.3 FM, with a video stream provided by the iFan Sports Network. Jon Garver will have the call.
