Yellowjackets Fall in UMAC Championship

The first season in the UMAC has been kind to the Yellowjackets. They finished second in the conference during the regular season, and won their first UMAC playoff game Wednesday to advance to the championship. They met a familiar foe in Saturday's championship game in the St. Scholastica Saints, a team that the Yellowjackets had lost to twice already this season.

Unfortunately the third time was not the charm for the Yellowjackets as they fell on the road to St. Scholastica 5-0.

The Yellowjackets found themselves in an early hole in this one, when goalkeeper Ben Wilhelm (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) mishandled a Saints shot attempt that left the goal wide open. Mualigbe Keita (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Prairie Seeds Academy) earned a red card as a result of the play when he intentionally batted the ball away with his hands. The ensuing penalty kick was good, giving the saints a 1-0 lead 22:49 into the game.

Three minutes later St. Scholastica made it 2-0 when Jonny Harkin sent a Sean Morgan feed past Wilhelm at the 25:30 mark. Morgan then tallied a goal of his own at 26:43 to give the Saints a 3-0 lead. The third goal was a blast to the short side that Wilhelm was unable to corral.

Wilhelm was pulled 35:50 into the game for Ben Nelson (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) with the game essentially out of reach.

The second half saw Harkin score his second of the match to give the Saints a 4-0 lead at 60:16. Less than 10 minutes later Morgan netted his second of the match, making it 5-0 St. Scholastica at 69:49.

The match was marred by yellow and red cards, as there were 12 issued in the match. The Yellowjackets were assessed five yellow cards and two red cards, while the Saints were assessed five yellow cards.

Wilhelm started in goal for the Yellowjackets, allowing three goals while making one save in 35:59 of game time. He was relieved by Nelson who allowed two goals while making seven saves in 54:01 of game time. Wilhelm took the loss and falls to 15-6-0 on the season.

Sandy Davidson-Hunt started in goal for St. Scholastica, making four saves while not allowing a goal in 72:36 of game time. He was relieved by Chris Rothstein, who played the final 17:24, making one save without allowing a goal.

The Yellowjackets (16-6-0, 8-2-0) must now wait to see if they qualify for an at-large bid for the NCAA tournament.
