Schradle's Career Night Propels Yellowjackets to Victory

Box Score

Yellowjackets 79, UW-Stout 71

The 2015-16 season has not been kind to the Yellowjacket men's basketball team. Following a tight loss at the hands of defending National Champion UW-Stevens Point, the Yellowjackets have struggled to stay with any of their following opponents, opening the season at 0-3.

That all changed Tuesday night as the Yellowjackets defeated UW-Stout 79-71 for their first win the the 2015-16 campaign.

The Yellowjackets jumped out to an early 8-2 lead thanks to a Brian Linbloom jumper followed by consecutive Schradle 3-pointers. The Blue Devils cut the lead down to three, but another Lindblom layup followed by another Schradle 3-pointer pushed the Yellowjacket lead to 14-6.

It was at this point the Yellowjackets lost their shooting touch, allowing Stout to take a 23-18 lead with 8:38 remaining in the half. The lead would be short lived, as Lindblom hit a jumper and made the ensuing free throw to put the Yellowjackets up 26-25 with 5:57 remaining in the half. Stout retook the lead at 5:49, but the Yellowjackets answered right back with a Taylor Mattison (Sturgeon Lake, Minn./Moose Lake-Willow River) layup to tie the game at 28-28.

The Yellowjackets then went on an 8-0 run over the next two minutes to take a 36-28 lead with 3:36 remaining in the first half. The Blue Devils would only make one more shot the rest of the half as the Yellowjackets went into halftive with a 45-33 lead following a Schradle layup and Vid Milenkovic (Zurich, Switzerland/DSB) jump shot.

Both teams came out shooting ice cold in the second half, as the first made basket was a Mattison layup with 18:06 remaining, giving the Yellowjackets a 47-33 lead. Stout's offense seemed to find a bit of a rhythm at this point, as they managed to cut the Yellowjacket lead down to five points at 49-44 with 16:07 remaining in the second half.

That is all the closer that the Blue Devils would get, as the Yellowjackets were able to hold Stout at arm's length to secure their first victory of the 2015-16 season. The victory also marked the fourth win in a row for the Yellowjackets against the Blue Devils

This game was the Zach Schradle (Clayton, Wis./Clayton) show, as he led all scorers with a career high 33 points, which is the most by a Yellowjacket since Dec. 27, 2013 when Jarrod Peterson scored 34 in a 101-87 loss to George Fox. Schradle also finished with a team leading eight rebounds, which put him two rebounds short of his seventh career double-double. Schradle also lead the team in assists with five and steals with four. Schradle was a perfect 5-5 from beyond the 3-point arc.

Lindblom was the only other Yellowjacket in double figures, finishing with 15 points and eight rebounds before fouling out.

Stout was paced by John Keefe, who finished with 23 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and four steals, leading the Blue Devils in all categories. Jalen Patterson added 14 points and five rebounds for Stout, while Colton Williams finished with 10 points and six rebounds.

The Yellowjackets shot 52.9% from the field, hitting 8-15 from beyond the 3-point arc, while going 17-29 from the free throw line.

Stout shot 51% from the field, hitting 12-26 from beyond the 3-point arc, while going 17-29 from the free throw line.

The Yellowjackets committed 16 turnovers, while the Blue Devils committed 18.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (1-3, 0-0 UMAC) is a road trip to Mankato, Minn. for their inaugural UMAC game against Bethany Lutheran College. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
