Yellowjackets Unable to Overcome Early Deficit

Box Score

Concordia-Moorhead 4, Yellowjackets 1

The Yellowjacket women's hockey team was in action Saturday afternoon, playing host to the Cobbers of Concordia-Moorhead.  The setting of the game played into the holiday spirit, as Yellowjacket Athletics collected toys for the Toys for Tots drive, and the Yellowjackets wore ugly sweater jerseys that were auctioned off after the game.

Unfortunately for the Yellowjackets, the festivities did not help their play on the ice, as they fell into a 3-0 hole after two periods, before falling to Concordia-Moorhead 4-1.

The Cobbers wasted little time getting on the board in this matchup, scoring 0:45 into the game. Tori Davis was able to go top shelf on Yellowjacket goalie Natasha Singer (Kimberley, British Columbia/Warner) to make it 1-0 Cobbers. Anna Westmark assisted on the even strength goal. Things settled down a little bit after that, as the Yellowjackets went into the break trailing 1-0.

The second period saw the Cobbers increase their lead to 3-0. The first of two goal in the period came at the 9:42 mark when Amber Schaack's shot found the mark. Jess Nelson and Jessica Kongelf assisted on the even strength goal. The second goal of the period came as the result of a Yellowjacket penalty. At the 16:09 mark of the second, Lynne Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba) was assessed a checking penalty, giving the Cobbers the power play opportunity. They took advantage a minute later when Hannah Johnston beat Singer to give the Cobbers a 3-0 lead at 17:17 in the second.

The Yellowjackets were able to narrow the deficit on Karen Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/Steinbach Regional Secondary)'s fifth goal of the season. Larson buried a rebound off of a Leah Elledge (Champlin Park, Minn./Champlin Park) shot to make it 3-1 Cobbers 0:29 into the third. Elledge got the assist on the even strength goal.

Concordia-Moorhead ended any chance of a Yellowjacket comeback when scored Unassisted at 4:48 in the period to make it 4-1 Cobbers.

Singer got the start in net for the Yellowjackets, allowing four goals while making 15 saves. She is now 3-3-2 on the season.

Andrea Klug started in net for Concordia-Moorhead, allowing one goal while making 32 saves. Klug moves to 7-2-0 on the season.

This game marked the end of the first half of the season for the Yellowjackets (6-6-3, 1-3-2 WIAC). Next up is a road game against St. Catherine University Friday, January 8. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
