Yellowjackets Unable to Overcome Early Deficit

Box Score

UW-River Falls 5, Yellowjackets 2

The Yellowjacket women's hockey team was at home Friday night facing a tough conference test against UW-River Falls. The Yellowjackets were looking to extend their unbeaten streak to five games, as they came into the game with confidence after taking the weekend series from UW-Stevens Point the previous week. Another factor favoring the Yellowjackets was that they had the two time WIAC women's player of the week, Natasha Singer (Kimberley, British Columbia/Warner), starting in goal for them for the fifth consecutive game.

Despite all this, the Yellowjackets were unable to overcome an offensive onslaught by the Falcons as they fell 5-2.

UW-River Falls wasted little time getting on the board in this matchup. Chloe Kinsel was able to put the puck past Singer 3:58 into the game to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. Izzy Brosseau and Dani Sibley assisted on the even strength goal.

The Falcons pushed the lead to 2-0 2:54 into the second period as Kinsel netted her second of the game. Haley Nielsen and Jillayne Gilbert assisted on the goal, which came just after the Yellowjackets had killed a Maggie Cragg (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) tripping penalty.

The Yellowjackets were able to cut the lead in half when Abby Constant-Bercier (The Pas, Manitoba) scored her second of the season. Constant-Bercier blasted a shot that beat Falcon goaltender Angie Hall to cut the UW-River Falls lead to 2-1 6:11 into the second. Lexie Weiss (Sleepy Eye, Minn./New Ulm) and Hailey Adair (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park) assisted on the even strength tally.

UW-River Falls pushed the lead to 3-1 11:54 into the second period. Kinsel completed her hat trick as she beat Singer off of a Sibley feed. The Yellowjackets fought back to cut the lead to one once more, as Mikayla Goodin (Andover, Minn./Andover) scored her fourth of the year at the 19:20 mark of the third period. Hailey Adair (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park) and Leah Elledge (Champlin Park, Minn./Champlin Park) assisted on the even strength tally.

The Falcons put the game out of reach at the 9:38 mark of the third. Following the completion of a Yellowjacket power play, UW-River Falls was able to force a turn over and get a 2-on-0 break going the other way. Sibley, after assisting on two previous goals, beat Singer high to make it 4-2 Falcons. UW-River Falls capped the scoring at 11:47 in the third when Karliegh Wolkerstorfer beat singer to make it 5-2 in favor of the Falcons. Paige Johnson assisted on the even strength tally.

Singer started in goal for the Yellowjackets, allowing five goals while making 15 saves. She is now 2-1-2 on the season.

Hall started in goal for the Falcons, allowing two goals while making 26 saves.

The Yellowjackets were 0-6 on the power play. UW-River Falls was 0-2.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (5-4-3, 1-2-2 WIAC) is a road trip to River Falls, Wis. for a rematch against UW-River Falls. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
