Box Score

Stevens Point 70, Yellowjackets 60

The 2014-15 season came to a close for the Yellowjacket men's basketball team Saturday. An up-and-down campaign early, the second half of the season was a rough one for the Yellowjackets, and Saturday followed that pattern.

The Yellowjackets led the game at the Mertz when the teams got to halftime, but in the end the Pointers proved to be too much and rallied to defeat the Yellowjackets 70-60.

In the early game the teams traded buckets, with a number of lead changes in the first five minutes. Ty Ketz (Clayton, Wis./Clayton) made a layup with 9:23 to play in the half, tying the score at 14-14. A pair of free throws by Brian Lindblom (Spooner, Wis./Spooner) gave the Yellowjackets a two-point lead shortly after. Stevens Point tied the game, but the Yellowjackets countered when Marquise Slay (Detroit, Mich./Ferndale) hit a three to give the Yellowjackets the lead again. Later in the half the Pointers tied the game, but again the Yellowjackets broke the tie, this time on a basket from Ketz.

The Yellowjackets built the first-half lead to as many as five points, only to have the Pointers bring it back to a one-possession game. Up two with 2:30 left in the half, Zach Schradle (Clayton, Wis./Clayton) made a free throw to make it a three-point game. Ketz hit a three to build the lead to six, but the Pointers answered with a three of their own. With 16 seconds to play in the half Ketz hit another three, and the Yellowjackets went to the locker room with a six-point lead, 33-27.

As the second half unfolded the Yellowjackets kept the lead at six points, but the Pointers began to make a move with 16:45 to play. A three by Jordan Lutz cut the lead in half. Less than a minute later Stephen Pelkofer hit another three and the Yellowjacket lead was down to one. Later the game was tied at 43-43 when the Pointers took the lead for good. Lutz made a pair of free throws with 9:12 to play to break the tie.

Stevens Point went on an 11-2 run midway through the half to blow the game open.

Trailing by nine, Ketz made a pair of free throws to cut into the deficit. Lindblom followed with four straight points to make it a one-possession game, with Stevens Point leading 54-51. The Yellowjackets kept the game within four points into the final minute, but the Pointers were perfect from the line and closed the Yellowjackets out, earning the 10-point win.

Ketz led the Yellowjackets with 22 points. Lindblom added 19 and Schradle scored 12 to go along with a team-best 11 rebounds. As a team the Yellowjackets shot 41.5 percent for the game.

Stevens Point shot 55.3 percent in the game and had four players score in double figures. Austin Ryf led the Pointers with 18 points while Lutz scored 17.

The Yellowjackets close the season 9-16 overall and 3-13 in WIAC play.
