River Falls Takes Down Yellowjackets Again

Leah Elledge scored her third goal of the year for the Yellowjackets Saturday.
Box Score

River Falls 5, Yellowjackets 2

For every team it seems, there is that one opponent that just gives them fits. For the Yellowjacket women's hockey team, UW-River Falls is that opponent.

Over the last three seasons the Falcons have had the Yellowjackets' number. Saturday afternoon in River Falls, the teams met for the fourth time in 2014-15. And unfortunately for the Yellowjackets, the result this time around was the same was it was in the three prior contests.

River Falls scored the first three goals of the game and cruised past the Yellowjackets by a 5-2 score at W.H. Hunt Arena. The Falcons completed a season sweep of the Yellowjackets with the victory, outscoring them 19-6 in the process. Over the last three seasons, the Yellowjackets are 1-8-1 versus the Falcons.

It took River Falls just 4:59 to draw first blood Saturday. Brianna Breiland scored her sixth of the season to make it 1-0. Carly Moran added an unassisted goal at 15:14 of the opening frame and River Falls led 2-0 after the first period.

At the 4:22 mark of the second period River Falls' lead bulged to three, as Dani Sibley scored tenth of the year.

The Yellowjackets got on the board when a pair of former high school teammates combined for a goal. Leah Elledge (Champlin Park, Minn./Champlin Park) netted her third goal of the season, getting assist from Hailey Adair (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park) to cut the River Falls lead to 3-1. Elledge's goal came just shy of the midpoint in the game, at 9:21 of the second period.

River Falls got that goal back just 1:21 into the third period when Sibley scored her second of the game and 11th of the year to make it a 4-1 game. Alice Cranston added the fifth goal of the afternoon for River Falls, scoring her 15th of the year with just 1:03 to play.

The Yellowjackets closed out the scoring a few seconds later. Lynne Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba), on assists from Adair and Rebekah Hakk (Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead), potted her eighth of the season in the games final minute to make the final score 5-2.

Sky Brown (Lenore, Manitoba/Virden Collegiate Institute) made her first start as a Yellowjacket in the game and was tagged with the loss, falling to 0-2-0 on the year. She made 36 saves in the game. At the other end Angie Hall got the win for the Falcons, stopping 19 shots in the process.

For the game the Yellowjackets took six penalties for 12 minutes, while River Falls was penalized twice for four minutes. Neither team converted on the power play, the Falcons going scoreless in five chances and the Yellowjackets going without a goal in just one opportunity.

The Yellowjackets (14-8-0, 4-6-0 WIAC) will stay on the road next weekend, when they travel to UW-Stevens Point in a key two-game series. Game time Friday, February 13 is set for 7:00 p.m.
