Box Score

Hamline 3, Yellowjackets 1

All good things must end.

That's what the Yellowjacket volleyball team found out Monday night. Coming into the non-conference match with Hamline, the Yellowjackets were riding high, having won five consecutive games over the course of the last week and entering the game with a solid 7-2 record. No matter. In just the second home match of the season, the Yellowjackets were never able to get on track against the visitors from Hamline, and the Pipers outlasted the Yellowjackets, winning the match 3-1 at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.

Neither team was particularly sharp in the match, with both teams attacking at a clip under .200. The Yellowjackets also had 12 service errors, which contributed to their third loss on the season.

The match was tight from the beginning, with the teams trading points in the early going. The Yellowjackets won four striaght points to move ahead 11-8, but that's when the Pipers took control. Hamline went on a run, winning 11 straight points and in the blink of an eye the Yellowjackets were down by eight. The Yellowjackets stopped the bleeding and got back to within five points, but they would get no closer and the Pipers took the first set 25-20.

Hamline carried the momentum into the second set and moved into a 4-1 lead, but the Yellowjackets battled back to tie it. The Yellowjackets then got on a roll and took a four-point lead of their own but they couldn't hold it and the Pipers again took the lead at 13-12. The rest of the set the lead changed hands three times, and in it was the Yellowjackets who came out on top, taking the set 25-22 and tying the match 1-1.

The third set was again tight, with the teams being separated by two points or less early. Hamline was the first team to grab a three-point lead when they went ahead 13-10, but again the Yellowjackets rallied and put themselves in position to grab a lead in the match. Leading 22-19, the Yellowjackets were on the cusp of taking a 2-1 lead in the match, but Hamline had other ideas. The Pipers won four of five points to tie the set at 23-23. A Stephanie Bandelin (Esko, Minn./Esko) kill gave the Yellowjackets a one-point lead and put them at set point, but the Pipers wouldn't let the home team close it out, and outlasted them in the third set, winning 28-26 to move ahead 2-1.

In the fourth set Hamline again took the early lead but the Yellowjackets came back, tying the match and going ahead 10-9. The teams traded points for much of the rest of the set and were tied at 22-22 when Hamline went on a 3-0 run to close out the set 25-22 and give the the Pipers a 3-1 win in the match.

Bandelin led the Yellowjackets in the match with 13 kills, while Bailey Romans (Duluth, Minn./East) had 12. Ashlee Bayer (Cameron, Wis./Cameron) had nine kills and Ana Biscaia (Curitiba, Brazil/Colégio Positivo) had seven kills and 15 digs. Emily VerWay (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) also had a strong match with 45 assists and 14 digs.

Mackenzie Dahlin (Kaukauna, Wis./Kaukauna) led the Yellowjackets with 23 digs.

The Yellowjackets (7-3, 0-0 UMAC) will be competing Friday, September 18 and Saturday, September 19 at the UMAC Preview. Friday's matches will be against St. Scholastica at 5:00 p.m. and Martin Luther at 7:00 p.m. All games will be played in St. Paul, Minnesota.
