Yellowjackets Down Hamline, Win 5th Straight

Erik Boese and Adrian Leal celebrate a late first half goal against Hamline.
Box Score

Yellowjackets 3, Hamline 1

The Yellowjacket men's soccer team took to the pitch Sunday a well-rested crew after having a full week off between contests. Riding a four-game winning streak, the Yellowjackets hoped to extend the stretch as they hosted Hamline University at the Yellowjacket Soccer Complex. The match was even for the most part, save for an eight minute stretch where the Yellowjacket offense exploded scoring three times to propel the Yellowjackets to a 3-1 win.

In the early going the Yellowjackets controlled the play, but Hamline evened things out as the first half progressed. As time in the half was winding down and the score still 0-0, the Yellowjackets used a free kick to break through. Following a Hamline foul Reyman Solis (Kirkland, Ill./Huntley), in a play reminisent of the game winner last Sunday against Carthage, directed the free kick toward the Piper goal where Joey Gustafson (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) deflected it home, scoring his third goal of the year and staking the Yellowjackets to the 1-0 lead with 4:41 to play in the first half.

With just over a minute to play in the half the Yellowjackets struck again. This time Adrian Leal (Alicante, Spain/IES Cabo de la Huerta) moved the ball across the box to Erik Boese (New Berlin, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) who was coming down the right and he made no mistake, sending a shot into the lower right corner to make it 2-0 with 1:01 to play in the half.

Shots on goal in the first half were even 3-3.

The momentum the Yellowjackets built late in the first half spilled over into the second as they pushed the lead to three. Just 3:16 into the half Gustafson started the play with a throw in and Trent Holmes (North Branch, Minn./North Branch) timed his leap perfectly, directing the header home to make it a 3-0 Yellowjacket lead.

Hamline stopped the bleeding and broke the Yellowjacket shutout at 68:02 Abbai Habte scored to cut the Yellowjacket lead to 3-1.

As the second half wore on the physical game ramped up, with both teams committing fouls and the Yellowjackets being called for multiple yellow cards. In the end, the Pipers could get no closer and the Yellowjackets earned their fifth straight win.

Ben Wilhelm (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) once again started in goal for the Yellowjackets and got the win, improving to 6-1-0 on the year. He made six saves. Dean Isaacson made four saves in the losing effort for Hamline.

The Yellowjackets (6-1-0, 1-0-0 UMAC) will square off with Twin Ports rival St. Scholastica Wednesday, September 23. Game time at the Yellowjacket Soccer Complex is set for 4:15 p.m.
