St. Scholastica Ends Yellowjacket Win Streak

Box Score

St. Scholastica 4, Yellowjackets 0

They say that all good things must end. At least that's what the pop duo Chad and Jeremy told the world in 1964. Fast forward 51 years and the Yellowjacket men's soccer team can tell you the same thing.

Riding high on a five-match winning streak and jumping up two slots in the lastest NSCAA regional poll (to No. 8), the Yellowjackets played host to Twin Ports rival St. Scholastica Wednesday afternoon. Over the years the matches between the foes have been hotly contested, and at times tempers have flared. All of that will be ramped up another notch from here on out, as the teams find themselves in same conference for the first time.

When the pre-season coaches poll was announced, the Saints were chosen to win the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference, with the Yellowjackets right behind them in second place. And in the first-ever conference meeting between the two, the Saints played the role of conference favorites perfectly.

St. Scholastica scored early in the match and put three on the board in the first half to propel itself to a 4-0 win over the Yellowjackets at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex Wednesday.

With the loss, the Yellowjacket winning streak was snapped at five.

The Saints peppered the Yellowjackets with shots early, with 15 attempts in the first half to just five for the Yellowjackets. Shots on goal also favored the Saints at 4-1, and it took them less than 15 minutes to make one of those shots on goal count.

Charlie Crane opened the scoring for St. Scholastica, putting a shot past Yellowjacket goalkeeper Ben Wilhelm (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) at 14:52 to make it 1-0. The Saints made it 2-0 at 21:59 on a goal by Sean Morgan, and then increased the lead again a few minutes later, when Shawayne Folkes scored at 24:03 to make it 3-0.

St. Scholastica closed out the scoring early in the second half when Jonny Winter scored at 48:43 to make the final score 4-0.

The Saints outshot the Yellowjackets 22-11 in the match. Shots on goal favored the Saints 6-2. Jon Bucklew (Somerset, Wis./Somerset) and Ryan Wisdom (Hayward, Wis./Hayward) had the shots on goal for the Yellowjackets.

Wilhelm finished the match with two saves on six shots on goal. His record for the year falls to 6-2-0. For St. Scholastica Sandy Davidson-Hunt made two saves in the shutout victory.

The match was the first of two meetings this season between the clubs. They will meet again on the St. Scholastica side of the bridge October 14. Next up for the Yellowjackets (6-2-0, 1-1-0 UMAC), however is a date with Bethany Lutheran College. The teams will square off in Mankato, Minnesota Saturday, September 26. The match will get underway at 2:00 p.m.
