Yellowjackets Shut Out by Saints

Bailey Henderson had four saves for the Yellowjackets Wednesday
Box Score

St. Scholastica 2, Yellowjackets 0

Wednesday morning brought one of the wettest periods in recent memory to the Twin Ports, with several inches of rain dumped on Superior and Duluth. The precipitation, much needed due to the recent drought, was not welcome for area soccer fans, as the rain combined with the lightning put the day's match-up between the Yellowjacket women's soccer team and St. Scholastica in jeopardy.

A move across the street to the NBC Spartan Sports Complex, where the teams could play on turf, coupled with a break from the rain gave the teams enough time to get the match, their first ever as conference foes, in as scheduled.

And the rivals didn't disappoint.

The first meeting in several years between the Yellowjackets and the Saints was about as even a match as could be played, with the exception of what transpired on the scoreboard. And this time it was the Saints who triumphed, winning the UMAC contest 2-0 on a wet and windy day in Superior.

The teams battled to a scoreless tie at halftime. St. Scholastica had the edge in shots attempted in the opening frame, 8-4, and had the advantage in shots on goal at 2-1.

In the second half the Saints broke through, getting all the offense they would need in the 65th minute. Rachel Dixon started the play on a corner kick, and ended it by scoring the goal, getting a loose ball off a carom and beating Yellowjacket goalkeeper Bailey Henderson (Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul) to make it 1-0. The Saints added an insurance goal at 80:07 when Becca Rancour tallied an unassisted marker to stretch the lead to 2-0.

St. Scholastica outshot the Yellowjackets 16-7 for the game, and had a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. Shelby Coombs (Anaheim, Calif./Magnolia ), Amanda Ambrose (Columbus, Ohio/Ramstein), and Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis./Valders) had the shots on goal for the Yellowjackets.

Henderson made four saves in goal for the Yellowjackets, and with the loss falls to 0-3-0 on the year. At the other end Kelsey Reeves made three saves to get the win for the Saints.

The Yellowjackets (1-4-0, 1-1-0 UMAC) will remain in conference play for their next match, coming up Saturday, September 26 when they travel to Mankato, Minnesota to take on Bethany Lutheran College. Game time is set for 4:15 p.m.
