Bethany Lutheran Trips Up Yellowjackets

The Yellowjacket women's soccer team deserved better than it got Saturday in Mankato, Minnesota when they took on Bethany Lutheran College. They dominated the contest from start to finish and appeared on track to earn their second UMAC win of the season with strong play at both ends of the field. The only problem was there was one place the Yellowjackets didn't dominate, and that was on the scoreboard.

Despite a significant Yellowjacket advantage in shots and shots on goal, it was the Vikings who did all the scoring, tallying twice in the first half to pick up the 2-0 win.

The story of the match came in the Bethany Lutheran goal, where Averi Cash earned the shutout by stopping all 17 shots that came her way. The Yellowjackets outshot the Vikings 23-13 and had an edge in shots on goal of 17-6, but every time an opportunity presented itself Cash was there to turn it away.

Bethany Lutheran opened the scoring in the seventh minute Ali Mix scored an unassisted goal to make it 1-0. The lead went to 2-0 in the 40th minute when Mix scored her second of the match, this time on an asisst from Bridget Hennen.

From there it was all about defense and goalkeeping for the Vikings, as they bent but never broke under the relentless pressure of the Yellowjackets.

Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis./Valders) led the Yellowjackets with eight shots on goal in the match, while Shelby Coombs (Anaheim, Calif./Magnolia ) added two.

Bailey Henderson (Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul) got the start in goal for the Yellowjackets and finished the day with four saves on six shots. Her hard luck continues as she takes the loss, falling to 0-4-0 on the year despite playing strong in goal.

The Yellowjackets (1-5-0, 1-2-0 UMAC) are back home Tuesday, September 29 when they host Northland College. Game time from the Yellowjacket Soccer Complex is set for 4:15 p.m.
