Yellowjackets Can't Hold Off Lumberjills

It was a soccer doubleheader at the Yellowjacket Soccer Complex Tuesday, as the Yellowjacket men's and women's soccer teams played host to opposition from Northland College. In the second game of the day the Yellowjacket women looked to follow the men's lead and earn the UMAC victory, evening their record in conference play. And in the early going things looked good, but when the dust settled it was the Lumberjills that earned the victory.

Northland scored a pair of goals early in the second half to pull away from the Yellowjackets and pick up the 4-1 win on a picture-perfect autumn afternoon in Superior.

The Yellowjackets got the game going in a great way, breaking the scoreless tie early in the first half. The first goal came off a corner kick, with Shelby Coombs (Anaheim, Calif./Magnolia ) putting the ball in play and Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis./Valders) directing a shot into the bottom right corner of the goal to make it 1-0 Yellowjackets. For Linzmeier, the all-time leading scorer in UW-Superior women's basketball history, it was her first collegiate goal and came just 5:33 into the first half.

Northland scored the equalizer at 37:18 when Laura Rethmann scored on a crossing pass and placed a shot into the lower left corner of the goal to make it 1-1.

The score stayed tied for the remainder of the first half, a half in which Northland outshot the Yellowjackets 6-3 and held a 6-2 edge in shots on goal.

Less than two minutes into the second half the Lumberjills broke the tie. At 46:43 Kaiya Voldberg scored an unassisted goal, sending a shot into the lower left corner to make it 2-1. Just 80 seconds later Northland struck again, with Madeleine Wieland scored unassisted, getting her own rebound of a shot that hit the goal post and sending it into the lower right corner at 48:03 to stretch the lead to 3-0.

Northland closed out the scoring at the 67:00 mark of the match when Voldberg, on an assist from Rethmann, scored her second goal of the match, sending a shot into the lower left corner, to make the final score 4-1.

For the match Northland outshot the Yellowjackets 15-11. Shots on goal in the match also favored the Lumberjills, 11-6.

Bailey Henderson (Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul) got the start in goal and took the loss, with her record falling to 0-5-0 on the year. She finished the match with seven saves. At the other end Alexandra Ritchie got the win, finishing the match with five saves.
