Monster Second Half Lifts Luther Over Yellowjackets

Ryan Wisdom
Box Score

Luther 7, Yellowjackets 1

Riding high off a thrilling road win to open the season Tuesday, the Yellowjacket men's soccer team continued its early-season road swing Saturday when they headed to Decorah, Iowa for a date wtih Luther College. The Norse, ranked among the top teams in the nation a year ago, were coming off an uncharacteristic loss to St. Olaf to open the season.

As uncharacteristic as the loss earlier in the week was for the Norse, so was Saturday's outcome uncharacteristic for the Yellowjackets.

Luther scored six times in the second half to turn a tight game at halftime into a rout, winning going away 7-1. The loss was the most lopsided defeat in the tenure of Yellowjacket Head Coach Joe Mooney.

With things close as things were early, Luther had the better of the chances and broke through in the 36th minute on Aidan O'Driscoll's goal.

It stayed that way until early in the second half when the Norese scored four times in just under 16 minutes to pull away. Goals 50:34 and 54:21 made it a 3-0 game.

The Yellowjackets broke the shutout bid at the 56:30 mark when Tuesday's hero, Trevor Laroche-Theune (LaPointe, Wis./Bayfield ), converted a feed from Ryan Wisdom (Hayward, Wis./Hayward) into his second goal of the season, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

Luther was undaunted, however, and got that marker back at 64:04 when Myles Norville scored off a corner kick. Aaron Fargo added a goal just over two minutes later to make it 5-1. Josh Galvin and Masaki Nakamura scored goals in the 72nd and 89th minutes, respectively, to make the final score 7-1.

The Yellowjackets were outshot in the game 13-6, and shots on goal also heavily favored the Norse, 7-2. Laroche-Theune and Wiscom accounted for both Yellowjacket shots in the contest.

Ben Wilhelm (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) made his second straight start in goal and took the loss, falling to 1-1 on the year. At the other end Tommy Breen started for the Norse and made one save in 71:40 of play before giving way to Blaise Schaeffer who played the rest of the way.

The Yellowjackets (1-1, 0-0 UMAC) will look to get back in the win column when they take on Wartburg College Sunday in Waverly, Iowa. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
