Saint Mary's Shuts Out Yellowjackets

After a tough match at home to open the season, the Yellowjacket women's soccer team hit the road Saturday to face Saint Mary's University. A year ago the Cardinals visited the Yellowjackets in Superior and shut them down, defeating them 7-0. Saturday the improved Yellowjackets had a stronger showing, but in the end the Cardinals proved to be too much as they shut out the Yellowjackets 4-0 in Winona, Minnesota.

Saint Mary's opened the scoring in the 11th minute of the first half when Emma Schaefer converted a Caroline Blackwood corner kick to make it 1-0. At the 27:11 mark of the opening half Yellowjacket goalkeeper Allie Paige came out to challenge a shooter and collided with a Saint Mary's player. Paige was injured on the play and had to leave the game, but she was also issued a yellow card, giving Saint Mary's a penalty kick. Schaefer took the kick and scored her second of the game to make it 2-0 Cardinals.

Early in the second half it went to 3-0 when Becca Dup scored her first of the year in the 57th minute. Saint Mary's closed out the scoring in the 72nd minute when Janis Martinez-Ortiz scored her first of the year to make the final score 4-0.

Saint Mary's outshot the Yellowjackets 15-5 for the match and held a 6-4 edge in shots on goal. Shelby Coombs (Anaheim, Calif./Magnolia ) led the Yellowjackets with two shots on goal, while Taylor Piechocki (Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc ) and Lily Marcelius (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) had one each.

Paige played the first 27:11, allowing one goal on two shots. She will take the loss and fall to 0-1 on the year. Bailey Henderson (Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul) relieved her in goal, playing the final 62:49 and making three saves. Aubrie Cornell made four saves in goal to earn the shutout and the win for Saint Mary's.

The Yellowjackets (0-2, 0-0 UMAC) will host former WIAC opponent UW-River Falls Tuesday, September 9 at the Yellowjacket Soccer Complex. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m.
