Box Score

Yellowjackets 1, Wartburg 0

One of the sayings in sports is that you can measure an athlete and a team by the way they respond to adversity. For the Yellowjacket men's soccer team, who yesterday suffered the worst defeat in Head Coach Joe Mooney's tenure at the hands of Luther College, Sunday offered them a perfect opportunity to respond to that adversity.

And respond they did.

The Yellowjackets came out Sunday and played inspired soccer, riding the strong goalkeeping of Ben Wilhelm (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) and another late goal from Trevor Laroche-Theune (LaPointe, Wis./Bayfield ) to a 1-0 win over Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. Wartburg entered the game the 17th-ranked team in the nation, but the Yellowjackets were undetered by the high ranking and put forth their best effort of the year.

In the first half Wartburg outshot the Yellowjackets 9-5 and shots on goal favored them 6-4. The best scoring chance of the first half went to Wartburg when Kevin Krueger was awarded a penalty kick in the final minute of the half, but Wilhelm made a huge save to send the teams into the break in a scoreless tie.

The second half saw the Yellowjackets flip the script and outshoot Wartburg 6-4, with a 2-1 edge in shots on goal. With the score still tied with more than the second half elapsed, the Yellowjackets were finally able to break through. Jonah Garcia (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) fed a pass to Laroche-Theune who blasted a shot into the upper corner of the net, scoring his third goal in as many matches to give the Yellowjackets the 1-0 lead in the 74th minute.

That would be all they would need, as their stifling defense and a rebound effort in goal by Wilhelm took care of the rest and gave the Yellowjackets the win.

Wilhelm, after a rough outing Saturday that saw him allow seven goals on seven shots, was much stronger Sunday, stopping all seven shots Wartburg sent his way to earn his first career shutout. He is now 2-1-0 on the year. At the other end, Austin Boyke made five stops in the losing effort for Wartburg.

Erik Boese (New Berlin, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) had three shots on goal, half the team's total, to lead the Yellowjackets.

The Yellowjackets (2-1-0, 0-0-0 UMAC) will play their fourth road match of the young season Wednesday, September 9 when they take on Bethel University in St. Paul. The match is set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
