Early Goal Sinks Yellowjackets

Box Score

UW-Eau Claire 1, Yellowjackets 0

Friday night was a special night at Siinto S. Wessman Arena. It was the night that the Yellowjacket hockey program and the Superior Jaycees hosted their annual game for a cause. This year the cause was mental health awareness, as the Yellowjackets skated out wearing special Green and Black jerseys.

Unfortunately, the Yellowjackets were unable to come out with a victory in the limited edition jerseys, as the fell to WIAC foe UW-Eau Claire by a score of 1-0.

This game looked as though it could go either way through much of the first period, with both teams having plenty of scoring opportunities. It was the Blugolds that managed to strike first in this one.

A Saige Patrick (Steinbach, Manitoba) penalty gave the Blugolds a power play at the 12:26 mark of the first period. The Yellowjackets penalty kill unit did a phenomenal job for much of the duration of the power play, limiting any Blugold attempt. Unfortunately for the Yellowjackets, UW-Eau Claire managed to sneak one by goaltender Natasha Singer (Kimberley, British Columbia/Warner) just before the penalty was about to expire, giving the Blugolds a 1-0 lead at the 14:20 mark of the first.

That goal would prove to be the game winner in this matchup, as the Yellowjackets and Blugolds skated to scoreless hockey over the final two periods. The Yellowjackets had multiple scoring opportunities in this matchup, including a 5-on-3 opportunity in the third period that turned out nothing. Be it good goaltending from the Blugolds, or bad luck or the Yellowjackets, none of those shots were able to find their mark as the Yellowjackets fell on their home ice.

Signer got the start in goal for the Yellowjackets, allowing one goal while making 18 saves. She moves to 3-4-2 on the season.

Paige Turner got the start in goal for the Blugolds, making 28 saves in the shutout effort. Turner is now 6-5-3 on the season.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (7-7-4, 1-4-2) is a road trip to Eau Claire, Wis. Saturday, January 23 for a rematch against UW-Eau Claire. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
