Big Second Half Pushes Yellowjackets Past Vikings

The Yellowjacket men's basketball team was in action Saturday afternoon to take on UMAC foe Bethany Lutheran College. The Yellowjackets were looking for back-to-back victories coming off their victory over Martin Luther Friday night that put an end to a four game losing streak. This game was also being billed as the UMAC Game of the Week.

The Yellowjackets didn't disappoint, breaking away in the second half to defeat the Vikings 99-75 and avenge a loss earlier in the season.

Things started out slowly for the Yellowjackets in this matchup, as they found themselves down 11-4 just over two and a half minutes into the game. They did not panic though, slowly chipping away at the Viking lead, before tying the game at 17-17 on a Taylor Mattison (Sturgeon Lake, Minn./Moose Lake-Willow River) 3-pointer with 12:51 remaining in the first half.

Bethany Lutheran retook the lead on the next possession and proceeded to go on a 7-3 lead to go up 25-20 with 8:57 left. Once again the Yellowjackets calmly chipped away at the Viking lead, taking a lead of their own with 6:11 remaining on a Montroy Scott (Fridley, Minn./Columbia Heights) layup. The teams then went on to exchange the lead back-and-forth for the remainder of the half, before a Zach Schradle (Clayton, Wis./Clayton) and-1 jumper and free throw put the Yellowjackets up 45-43 going into the break.

The second quarter opened up with the Yellowjackets building a 55-45 lead over the first three minutes of the quarter. Bethany Lutheran tried to push back, but the Yellowjackets always had an answer, pushing their lead to 99-75 with 3:26 remaining. With the game firmly in hand, Yellowjacket Head Coach Paul Eberhardt brought in many of his reserves to get them valuable varsity playing time.

Scott paced the Yellowjackets in this game, finishing with a team leading 21 points. He also had three assists and three steals.

Brian Lindblom (Spooner, Wis./Spooner) finished with 16 points. Schradle finished with 15 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Nate Kalien (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls) had 15 points, while Vid Milenkovic (Zurich, Switzerland/DSB) chipped in 12.

Bethany Lutheran was led by Brandyn Frelix, who finished with a game high 38 points. Frelix also had six rebounds.

The Yellowjackets shot 57.5% from the field, going 7-22 from beyond the 3-point arc, while hitting 8-12 from the free throw line.

Bethany Lutheran shot 50.9% from the field, going 0-9 from beyond the 3-point arc, while hitting 19-24 from the free throw line.

The Yellowjackets finished with five turnovers. The Vikings finished with 14.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (9-9, 6-4 UMAC) is a trip to Ashland, Wis. on Friday, January 29 to take on UMAC foe Northland College. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
