Yellowjackets Build Early Lead, Hold On to Defeat Blugolds

Box Score

Yellowjackets 3, UW-Eau Claire 2

The Yellowjacket women's hockey team was in action Saturday to complete the road portion of a home-and-home matchup against UW-Eau Claire. The Yellowjackets were hoping to get some revenge on the Blugolds following last night's 1-0 loss at Wessman Arena.

By the time the final horn sounded, the Yellowjackets had avenged their loss and defeated UW-Eau Claire 3-2.

The Yellowjackets opened up the scoring early in this matchup, when Kelly Cockerill (Selkirk, Manitoba/Oak Park)'s shot found the back of the net to give the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead at the 1:53 mark. Amanda Coey (Brandon, Manitoba/Crocus Plains) had the assist on Cockerill's first goal of the season. Lynne Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba) made it 2-0 Yellowjackets when she tallied an unassisted goal, her ninth of the season, at the 11:23 mark of the first.

The lead grew to 3-0 at the 7:02 mark of the second when Larson once again found the back of the net for her team leading 10th goal of the season. Emily Heid (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) and Saige Patrick (Steinbach, Manitoba) had the assists on the even strength marker.

The Blugolds got one back at the 9:00 mark of the second when a Rachel Azuma shot found the back of the net. Kelsey Rafferty had the assist on the even strength goal.

The Yellowjackets lead was cut to one goal at the 19:19 mark of the second. With the Blugolds on the power play following a too many players on the ice penalty, Maria Czech found pay dirt when her shot beat Yellowjacket goaltender Kim Kobar (The Pas, Manitoba/Margaret Barbour Collegiate). Lauren Norgren had the assist on the power play goal.

The Yellowjackets shut the door in the third period, as neither team was able to find the back of the net. The Blugolds pulled their goalie at the 17:30 mark of the period, but the Yellowjackets were able to withstand the extra attacker and hold on for the victory.

Kobar got the start in net for the Yellowjackets, allowing two goals while making 35 saves. She is now 1-1-1 on the season.

Paige Turner got the start in net for the Blugolds, allowing three goals while making 26 saves. Turner moves to 6-6-3 on the season.

The Yellowjackets took five penalties for 10 minutes. The Blugolds to six penalties for 12 minutes.

The Yellowjackets were 0-4 on the power play. The Blugolds were 1-3.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (8-7-4, 2-4-2 WIAC) is a road trip to River Falls, Wis. Saturday, January 30 to take on WIAC foe UW-River Falls. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
