Box Score

UW-Eau Claire 5, Yellowjackets 2

The Yellowjacket men's hockey team was in action Saturday to take on WIAC foe UW-Eau Claire. The Yellowjackets entered the game feeling confident coming off of back-to-back victories over UW-Stout. The game was also being billed as the Superior Jaycees Mental Health Awareness Game, as the Yellowjackets wore special green and black jerseys that were auctioned off after the game to support mental health awareness.

Unfortunately, the Yellowjackets were unable to pull off the victory, as they allowed four unanswered goals to fall to UW-Eau Claire 5-2.

Things did not look good from the early going for the Yellowjackets, as UW-Eau Claire jumped to a 1-0 lead 0:38 into the game. Things could have gotten much worse early after Owen Stauber (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown) took an interference penalty at the 15:13 mark, but the Yellowjackets were able to kill penalty and go into the first intermission only down one goal.

The second period saw the Yellowjackets come out on a tear as they looked to tie the game up. The momentum that the Yellowjackets had built looked like it had been stifled when Ian Ecklund (Twig, Minn./Proctor) went to the box for his own interference penalty at the 5:30 mark. This was not the case however, as Daniel Litchke (Superior, Wis./Superior) notched the Yellowjackets first shorthanded goal of the season at the 5:42 mark of the period. Viktor Sallhag (Vasteras, Sweden) and Matt Audette (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) had the assist on the goal, which was Litchke's fifth of the season.

The Yellowjackets used the energy that they had gained from Litchke's goal to keep the pressure on the Blugolds throughout the period. That pressure paid off at the 14:57 mark of the second when Anton Svensson (Sodertalje, Sweden/Igelstavikens Gymnasium)'s shot found the back of the net for his 12th goal of the season. Jordan Shockley (Duluth, Minn./Marshall School) and Ian Ecklund (Twig, Minn./Proctor) assisted on the power play goal.

A Stauber holding penalty at the 18:26 mark of the second marked the beginning of the end of the Yellowjackets. 20 seconds into the power play, UW-Eau Claire's Andy Knockenmus spun and released a shot that somehow managed to get by Yellowjacket goaltender Cory Simons (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) as the Blugolds tied the game up at 2-2. Knockenmus' shot was the only shot that the Blugolds had on net all period.

The Blugolds used that shift in momentum to score three more times in the third period, as what looked like a possible Yellowjacket victory turned quickly into defeat.

Simons got the start in net for the Yellowjackets, allowing four goals while making 23 saves. He is now 4-3-0 on the season.

Tyler Green got the start in goal for the Blugolds, allowing two goals while making 27 saves. Green moves to 9-4-1 on the season.

The Yellowjackets took six penalties for 12 minutes, with four of those penalties being interference calls. UW-Eau Claire took three penalties for six minutes.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (7-12-2, 1-3-0 WIAC) is a road trip Friday, February 5 to River Falls, Wis. to take on UW River Falls. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. and can be heard live on 91.3 FM, with the pre-game show beginning at 6:45 p.m. Jon Garver will have the call.
