Goodin’s Goals lead Yellowjackets past Falcons

Box Score

Yellowjackets 3, #8 UW-River Falls 1

The Yellowjacket women's hockey team went on the road Saturday looking for their second win in a row as they faced WIAC foe UW-River Falls. The game was bound to be tough for the Yellowjackets, as the Falcons entered the matchup as the number eight ranked team in the nation.

The rankings apparently don't mean anything to the Yellowjackets, as they scored three straight goals en route to a 3-1 victory over the Falcons.

Mikayla Goodin (Andover, Minn./Andover) opened the scoring for the Yellowjackets in this matchup, netting her sixth goal of the season at the 9:46 mark of the first to give the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead. Lexie Weiss (Sleepy Eye, Minn./New Ulm) had the assist on the even strength goal.

Following a scoreless second period, Goodin put the Yellowjackets up 2-0 at the 7:01 mark of the third when she netted her second of the game. Just over three minutes later, at the 10:33 mark of the third, Kelly Cockerill (Selkirk, Manitoba/Oak Park) made it 3-0 Yellowjackets with her second goal of the season. Amanda Coey (Brandon, Manitoba/Crocus Plains) had the assist on the even strength tally.

Facing a three goal deficit, the Falcons pulled their goalie with nearly five minutes remaining in the game in favor of an extra attacker. The strategy paid off right away, as UW-River Falls managed to get one back at the 16:44 mark on Ashley Effertz first goal of the season. Karleigh Wolkerstorfer had the assist on the goal.

The Yellowjacket defense tightened up the rest of the way, as they held on to their 3-1 lead the remaining 3:16 of the game.

Sky Brown (Lenore, Manitoba/Virden Collegiate Institute) got the start in goal for the Yellowjackets, allowing one goal while making 33 saves. Brown is now 5-2-1 on the season.

Angie Hall got the start in net for the Falcons, allowing three goals while making 13 saves in 55:03 of playing time before being pulled for an extra skater. Hall is now 14-4-1 on the season.

The Yellowjackets and Falcons each took four penalties four eight minutes, with both teams going 0-4 on the power play.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (9-7-4, 3-4-2 WIAC) is a home rematch against the Falcons on Saturday, February 6. Game time from Wessman Arena is set for 2:00 p.m.
