Yellowjackets, Wildcats Skate to a Tie

Box Score

Yellowjackets 1, St. Catherine 1 (OT)

The Yellowjacket women's hockey team opened up the second half of their season Friday night on the first leg of a home-and-home series against St. Catherine University. After playing .500 hockey through the first half of the season, the Yellowjackets were looking to open the second half with a win against their non-conference foe.

By the time the final horn sounded, the Yellowjackets and the Wildcats found themselves knotted up at 1-1.

St. Catherine got on the board first in this matchup, scoring at the 9:32 mark of the first. Alex Pederson's shot found its way past Yellowjacket goaltender Kim Kobar (The Pas, Manitoba/Margaret Barbour Collegiate) as the Wildcats took a 1-0 lead. Mallory Ryan and Randi Fabsits had the assists on the even strength goal.

The Yellowjackets were able to tie the game back up at 1-1 at the 10:34 mark of the second period when Lynne Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba) found the back of the net. Karen Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/Steinbach Regional Secondary) had the assist on the even strength tally.

St. Catherine had a chance to retake the lead less than a minute later when Mikayla Goodin (Andover, Minn./Andover) was called for a five minute major and 10 minute game misconduct for checking from behind. The Yellowjackets penalty kill unit put up a herculean effort as they prevented the Wildcats from even having a shot-on-goal during the penalty.

The third period and overtime saw plenty of opportunities from both sides to break the tie, but in the end defense was the key as these two teams skated to a tie.

Kobar got the start in goal for the Yellowjackets, allowing one goal while making 32 saves. She is now 0-1-1 on the season.

Abbi White started in goal for St. Catherine, allowing one goal while making 29 saves.

The Yellowjackets took four penalties for 19 minutes. St. Catherine took two penalties for four minutes.

The Yellowjackets were 0-1 on the power play. The Wildcats were 0-3.

The Yellowjackets (6-6-4) and St. Catherine will face off against each other Saturday, January 9 as they finish the second leg of the home-and-home series. Game time from Wessman Arena is set for 1:00 p.m.
