Box Score

Yellowjackets 2, St. Catherine 0

The Yellowjacket women's hockey team was at home Saturday to take on non-conference foe St. Catherine in the second leg of a home-and-home series between the two teams. After skating to a 1-1 tie Friday night, the Yellowjackets were looking to take home a victory on their home ice.

They did just that, as they won the weekend series by defeating the Wildcats by a final score of 2-0.

After skating to a scoreless tie after the first period, the Yellowjackets opened things up in the second frame. The Yellowjackets were finally able to break through at the 7:06 mark of the second period. Saige Patrick (Steinbach, Manitoba)'s shot beat the Wildcat goaltender to give Patrick her first goal of the season and give the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead. Lynne Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba) and Leah Elledge (Champlin Park, Minn./Champlin Park) had the assists on the even strength goal.

Just over two minutes later Maggie Cragg (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) scored her first goal of the season to make it 2-0 Yellowjackets at the 9:17 mark of the second. Amanda Coey (Brandon, Manitoba/Crocus Plains) and Kelley Cockerill had the assists on the even strength tally.

The remaining period and a half saw the Yellowjackets generate many more scoring opportunities, but all of them were turned away as they won the weekend series to open 2016 by going 1-0-1.

Sky Brown (Lenore, Manitoba/Virden Collegiate Institute) got the start in net for the Yellowjackets, making 23 saves in the shutout effort. Brown is now 4-2-1 on the season.

Kristen Pechacek got the start in net for St. Catherine, allowing two goals while making 46 saves. Pechacek moves to 1-4-2 on the season.

The Yellowjackets took four penalties for eight minutes, while St. Catherine did not have any penalties.

The Yellowjackets (7-6-4, 1-3-2 WIAC) now have two weeks off before returning to conference play Friday, January 22 when they host UW-Eau Claire as part of a home-and-home series. Game time from Wessman Arena is set for 7:00 p.m.
