Shelton and Yellowjackets get right with 6-1 beatdown of upstart Northland

The University of Wisconsin Superior rolled to a 6-1 victory over Northland College on Tuesday night as the Yellowjackets continued their three-game, non-conference homestand at Wessman Arena.

First-year forward Molly Shelton (Pine Island, Minn./Dodge County H.S.) scored the first two goals of her career to lead UW-Superior (1-2-0) on the night, while Northland fell to 0-3-0 in its inaugural season. Senior goalkeeper Kim Kobar (The Pas, Man./Margaret Barbour Collegiate) made 28 saves on the night for the Yellowjackets while UWS pelted the LumberJills' Chloe Marshall with 47 shots in the victory.

Northland gave the Yellowjackets a lot of chances, drawing four penalties in the first 12 minutes of the game but held UWS scoreless through the first three powerplay opportunities. Junior defender Emily Heid (Elk River, Minn./Elk River H.S.) finally made them pay on the powerplay, ripping a slapshot to put UWS up at the 8:28 mark of the first, getting assits from junior defender Saige Patrick (Steinbach, Man./St. Mary's Academy) and freshman forward Hannah Currin (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy H.S.).

After killing off a penalty of their own, the Yellowjackets struck again, this time with senior forward Amanda Coey (Brandon, Man./Crocus Plains H.S.) netting her first of the season on a scrum in front of the net, getting an assist from junior forward Mikayla Goodin (Andover, Minn./Andover H.S.). Northland would pull within one 5:34 into the second period as Robyn Matula skated in for an unassisted score. UWS would push its lead back to two and then three with a pair of goals separated by just nine seconds. Freshman forward Molly Shelton (Pine Island, Minn./Dodge County H.S.) rang a shot off the crossbar and into the back of the net, the first of her career, getting an assist from junior forward Kelly Cockerill (Selkirk, Man./Oak Park H.S.). On the ensuing faceoff, Goodin skated across the blueline and ripped a wrister that found the back of the net ant put the Yellowjackets up 4-1 headed to the second intermission.

Currin got on the board herself, netting the third goal of her season at the 7:20 mark of the period, redirecting a shot from senior forward Leah Elledge (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park H.S.) with freshman forward Kaleigh Martinson (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park H.S.) also credited with an assist on the play. UWS added from there with a second powerplay score as Hailey Adair (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park H.S.) skated a puck from the corner and ripped a shot towards the net that Shelton tipped in for her second score of the day. Martinson added the second assist of her evening on a pass to Adair.

The Yellowjackets finished 2-for-6 on powerplay attempts while holding Northland to 0-for-4. Northland had 29 shots on goal while UWS had 48 on the day.
