The University of Wisconsin-Superior could not handle the scoring onslaught from St. Olaf College as the Oles knocked off over the Yellowjackets 6-0 at Wessman Arena in Superior on Friday night.
St. Olaf (1-4-0) UW-Superior (RV, 3-2-0) early in the first, starting the scoring at 3:30 as Will Dittrich snuck one past junior goaltender
Ethan Wood (Jasper, Alberta/Paul Kane H.S.). The Oles gave the Yellowjackets nearly four minutes straight on the powerplay starting at 7:16 of the first, but UW-Superior (RV, 3-1-0) was unable to capitalize as the home team drew two penalties within 27 seconds at the tail end of their powerplay chance. St. Olaf took advantage of the 5-on-3 as well as the ensuing single-man advantage, scoring a pair of powerplay goals just 25 seconds apart and chasing Wood from the game after 11:45 in the net. Steven Sherman scored the first PP goal for the Oles, and assisted Patrick Sivets on the second. Despite trailing 3-0 after the first frame, the Yellowjackets led 11-8 in shots on goal headed to the locker room.
St. Olaf continued to build on its lead opening up the second period, as Kyle Rimbach scored his first of the year at 1:19 with an assist from Sawyer Jacobsen. Sherman added his second of the day just 1:17 later, giving the Oles a 5-0 lead at 3:36 of the second. The two teams skated fairly evenly and traded chances the rest of the period, including a great powerplay chance for UWS that saw them rip a pair of shots. After two, the Yellowjackets built on their shots lead, ahead 28-19 as the second intermission began.
After trading powerplay chances early in the third, St. Olaf tacked on another score as J.T. Paine netted his first of the night, getting an assist from Sivets, at 10:09. The two teams traded coincidental double-minor roughing penalties in the final minutes, but the game rolled to its conclusion without any further drama. UW-Superior finished 0-for-3 in powerplay opportunities, while the Oles were 2-for-5.
Bryce Fink (Tacoma, Wash./Keystone H.S.) finished with 15 saves in relief of Wood, who had three. Jude Hull made 37 saves for St. Olaf.
Sophomore
Daniel Litchke (Superior, Wis./Superior H.S.) and junior
Cal Miska (Stacy, Minn./North Branch H.S.) each had five shots to lead the Yellowjackets.
