The University of Wisconsin Superior took a 2-1 lead to the locker room at the first intermission before the offense exploded for a four-goal second as the Yellowjackets rolled to an 8-1 victory over Finlandia University at Wessman Arena on Saturday night.
UW-Superior (4-6-0) spread the offense around with six different goal-scorers on the day, snapping a five-game winless skid in the process. Finlandia (0-9-0) came out flying early against the Yellowjackets, but UWS drew first blood on the powerplay when
Nik Kosman (Calgary, Alta./Centennial H.S.) scored his second of the year at 5:11 of the first, assisted by senior
Anton Svensson (Sodertalje, Sweden/Igelstavikens Gymnasium) and sophomore
Viktor Sallhag (Vasteras, Sweden/Wenströmska Gymnasium). The Lions would draw even with an even-strength goal at 13:04 of the first, with Chuck Marcoe scoring his first of the year for Finlandia. Another powerplay chance late in the period went the way of the home team as sophomore
Daniel Litchke (Superior, Wis./Superior H.S.) put UW-Superior up with 33 seconds to go before the intermission, as Sallhag earned his second assist of the day with another going to Miettunen.
The Yellowjackets finished 5-for-9 with the man advantage, scoring once on the man advantage in the second period and twice more in the third period. Freshman
Bruno Birzitis (Riga, Latvia/Riga Distance Education Secondary) added to the UW-Superior lead just 33 seconds into the second period, assisted by Litchke and senior
Matt Audette (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln H.S.). Senior
Eric Shand (San Dimas, Calif./San Dimas H.S.) built on that lead just under 90 seconds later as he scored his second of the year, assisted by Svensson and senior
Jordan Neduzak (Morden, Man./Morden Collegiate Institute). Litchke became the first Yellowjacket to score a pair of goals on the day as he netted his seventh of the year redirecting a shot on the powerplay assisted by Sallhag and Audette.
Svensson added his first of the day with just 55 seconds in the second, putting the Yellowjackets up 6-1 headed to the locker room. He scored on the powerplay at 4:12 of the third, UW-Superior's fourth powerplay goal of the day. Audette and Sallhag had the assists. The trio teamed up for the final Yellowjacket goal of the day, with Sallhag scoring on the powerplay at 18:37, assisted by Audette and Svensson.
