The University of Wisconsin Superior shot 50.0 percent for the game, but it still proved not enough as in-state rival the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire shot 55.1 percent and hit 6-of-7 three-pointers in the first half en route to downing the Yellowjackets 74-60 at Mortorelli Gym on Tuesday night.
UW-Superior (1-3) hit just 2-of-10 from beyond the arc, while the Blugolds finished 8-for-16, distancing themselves down the stretch as UW-Eau Claire (4-3) averted a fourth quarter rally by the Yellowjackets. After leading 17-13 after the first quarter, UWS went quiet while Eau Claire started to heat up, hitting 9-of-11 shots in the second frame. The two teams combined for 19 first-half turnovers, but the Blugolds' lights-out shooting putting them up 41-28 at the break.
The Yellowjackets turned their luck around in the third quarter, quickly cutting the lead down to as little as two while out-scoring UWEC 22-17 in the period.
Hannah Norlin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield H.S.) knocked down nine of her team-high 14 points in the third. UW-Superior had its worst shooting span in the fourth quarter, hitting its first three shots to pull within two once again before finishing the game going 1-for-11 while the Blugolds collected nine defensive rebounds in the period. Eau Claire finished 12-of-15 from the free throw line while the Yellowjackets were just 8-of-12.
Six different players had at least five points on the night for UWS. Junior
Bailee Bartunek (Audobon, Minn./Lake Park-Audobon H.S.) scored each of her eight points in the first half. Juniors
Justine Larson (Stanchfield, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti H.S.) and
Jade Tucker (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake Area H.S.) also knocked down eight points for the Yellowjackets. Arien Brennan had 15 points to lead the Blugolds.
