UW-Superior undone by penalty kicks after UMAC Championship draw with St. Scholastica

Penalty kicks were not kind to the University of Wisconsin Superior during the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference postseason. After finishing just 1-for-3 on free chances in a semifinal victory over Northwestern, the Yellowjackets missed yet another PK during its 2-2 draw with the College of St. Scholastica in the UMAC Championship game on Saturday and then fell 3-2 in a shootout against the Saints to determine the victor.

UW-Superior would settle for an even season against its conference and border rival as St. Scholastica (12-7-1) would officially finish 1-1-1 against the Yellowjackets before the victory during kicks. After UWS started its season 0-6-0, the Saints were the only team to defeat or tie the Yellowjackets the rest of the way.

Junior forward Jon Bucklew (Somerset, Wis./Somerset H.S.) scored both goals for UW-Superior on the day, including scoring his second penalty kick goal of the postseason in the 27th minute. That score drew the Yellowjackets within one after St. Scholastica jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on goals by tournament MVP Shwayne Folkes and Luke Buckton but was UW-Superior's second chance at a PK on the day. In addition to giving the 'Jackets a free kick, the foul on the Saints ended up with a redcard assessed to Trygve Rennan, forcing the Saints to play a man down for nearly three-quarters of the game.

Bucklew scored his second of the day, securing a pass from senior Ryan Wisdom (Hayward, Wis./Hayward) on the left side of the goal and booting it to the far post out of the reach of the Saints' Sandy Davidson-Hunt. With the game still tied in the 83rd minute, a second caution was assessed to Luke Buckton and he was ejected from the game, meaning CSS would play two men down for the final 7 minutes of regulation and all of overtime.

The Yellowjackets out-shot St. Scholastica 31-6 on the day, controlling most of the play in the Saints' end. Davidson-Hunt made 12 saves for CSS while senior Ben Wilhelm (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area H.S.) had one for UWS. Freshman Corrado Rosato took over between the pipes for the Saints during the shootout, stopping three balls while Wilhelm stopped a pair.

The Yellowjackets end their season at 13-7-1.
