Northland comes from behind to take down UW-Superior

The University of Wisconsin Superior jumped out to an early lead on Northland College, but hot shooting in the second half gave the road team the edge as the LumberJacks came from behind to knock off the Yellowjackets 73-69 at Mortorelli Gym on Friday night.

UW-Superior (1-8, 0-3 UMAC) led 8-0 after junior Nate Kalien (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls H.S.) and freshman Rafael Monteiro (São Paulo, Brazil/Santa Marcelina College) knocked down a pair of three-pointers. The Yellowjackets would extend their lead to 11 with 12:39 remaining in the first but Northland (4-4, 3-0 UMAC) scraped back to take the lead with a three-pointer with 2:02 left in the half. After a lay-up by junior guard Shaq Coleman (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East H.S.) at the buzzer, the LumberJacks held a 35-34 lead at the break. Monteiro and Coleman gave UWS the lead with back-to-back scores opening up the second half, but Northland knocked down six three-pointers in the second half and finished a perfect 7-for-7 at the free throw line to eventually re-take the lead late and hold off the Yellowjackets.

Kalien finished with a game-high 18 points, while Monteiro added 17 and a team-high eight rebounds for UW-Superior Coleman also cracked double figures with 12 on the night. The LumberJacks shot 43.3 percent (26-of-60) on the day hitting nine threes while the Yellowjackets shot 48.1 percent (25-of-52) with six three-pointers.
