Wild Ending Leads to a Tie

Box Score

Yellowjackets 2, UW-Stevens Point 2 (OT)

The Yellowjacket women's hockey team was in action Saturday afternoon when they took on UW-Stevens Point in the 2015-16 WIAC regular season finale. The Yellowjackets were looking to bounce back against the Pointers following the previous night's 6-1 loss.

After a wild finish to end regulation and the overtime, the Yellowjackets and the Pointers ended the game in a 2-2 tie.

As they did the night before, the Pointers struck first in this matchup. Ali Biagini's shot found its way past Yellowjacket goaltender Kim Kobar (The Pas, Manitoba/Margaret Barbour Collegiate) at 6:58 in the first and just like that the Pointers had the lead. Despite a couple of power play opportunities in the period, the Yellowjackets were unable to tie it up as they went into the first intermission trailing 1-0.

The Yellowjackets erased the one goal deficit quickly in the second period. Stevens Point's Lexi Englund took a penalty for high sticking at 4:15 in the period and the Yellowjackets took advantage. Lynne Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba) took the puck on a breakaway, finding sister Karen Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/Steinbach Regional Secondary), who buried the puck at the 5:45 mark. The power play goal was Karen Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/Steinbach Regional Secondary)'s seventh of the season.

The third period saw the Yellowjackets take their first lead of the weekend series. Lexie Weiss (Sleepy Eye, Minn./New Ulm) put the Yellowjackets up 2-1 at 6:10 in the period with her third goal of the season. Emily Heid (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) and Karen Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/Steinbach Regional Secondary) had the assists on the even strength goal.

Things got a little crazy in the last two minutes of the third. With the Yellowjackets still nursing their one goal lead, Kelly Cockerill (Selkirk, Manitoba/Oak Park) took a penalty for hooking. As a result, Stevens Point pulled their goalie go have a 6-on-4 advantage to try and tie the game up. 52 seconds later, at 18:55 in the third, Pamela McLeod (Gillam, Manitoba/Balmoral Hall Prep) was then whistled for a roughing penalty, forcing the Yellowjackets to play the final 1:05 of regulation with only three skaters.
It did not take long following McLeod's penalty for the Pointers to tie up the game. Stevens Point's Emily Lester had her shot blocked right too Hailey Rock. Rock then fed the puck back to Lester, who beat Kobar to tie the game up at 2-2.

This did not end the excitement however, as the Yellowjackets were still down one skater over the final 0:37. Then, just as the third period expired, Lynne Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba) was whistled for a roughing call, to put the Yellowjackets on the penalty kill for much of the start of the overtime period. Thankfully, the Yellowjacket penalty killers did their job, as Kobar shut the door in overtime to preserve the tie.

Kobar got the start in net for the Yellowjackets, allowing two goals while making 33 saves. She is now 1-1-2 on the season.

Lisa Fowle got the start in net for the Pointers, allowing two goals while making 24 saves. Fowle is now 5-3-1 on the season.

The Yellowjackets took eight penalties for 15 minutes. The Pointers took five penalties for 10 minutes. The Yellowjackets were 1-5 on the power play. UW-Stevens Point was 1-8.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (9-9-5, 3-6-3 WIAC) is a home game on Tuesday, February 16 when they take on the University of St. Thomas. Game time from Wessman Arena is set for 7:00 p.m.
