Tommies Topple Yellowjackets in Overtime

Box Score

St. Thomas 4, Yellowjackets 3 (OT)

The Yellowjacket women's hockey team was in action Tuesday night to take on non-conference foe St. Thomas. This matchup marked the first time since November 1, 2011, a game that the Tommies and Yellowjackets tied.

An early lead, a comeback, and some drama late eventually led to defeat in overtime for the Yellowjackets.

The Yellowjackets struck first in this one. With 3:11 remaining in the first on Mikayla Goodin (Andover, Minn./Andover)'s eight goal of the season. Goodin got the puck on a breakaway and fired a wrister that beat the St. Thomas goalie high to give the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead.

The Yellowjackets made it 2-0 at 3:47 in the second. Once again the Yellowjackets found themselves on a breakaway. This time Lynne Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba) scored the goal, her 11th of the season. Karen Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/Steinbach Regional Secondary) had the assist on the even strength goal.

Things started to unravel at 16:58 in the second period, when St. Thomas's Kathryn Larson scored her 12th of the season. Allie Borgstrom and Karina Marette had the assists on the even strength goal that cut the Yellowjacket lead to 2-1.

The Tommies scored twice in a short span in the third to tie the game and then take the lead from the Yellowjackets. The first goal came at 4:07 when Kaylee Druk beat Yellowjacket goaltender Sky Brown (Lenore, Manitoba/Virden Collegiate Institute) for her eight of the season. Kathryn Larson and Borgstrom had the assists on the even strength tally.

The go-ahead goal came just over two minutes later, at 6:28, when Rachel Friberg scored her fourth of the season. Leah Schwartzman and Hannah Burns had the assists on the even strength goal that saw a 2-0 Yellowjacket lead turn into a 3-2 deficit.

Down a goal the Yellowjackets were forced to pull their goalie with a little under two minutes remaining in the game. The move paid off in a big way. Hailey Adair (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park) netted her sixth goal of the year at 19:12 to tie the game up at 3-3. Lynne Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba) and Karen Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/Steinbach Regional Secondary) had the assists on the goal that would send the Yellowjackets and Tommies into overtime tied up at 3-3.

It did not take long for the Tommies to end any chance of a Yellowjacket upset in overtime. Ellie Tabaka's shot at 1:17, the Tommies only of the overtime period, got by Brown to give St. Thomas the overtime victory.

Brown got the start in net for the Yellowjackets, allowing four goals while making 34 saves. She is now 5-4-1 on the season.

Mackenzie Torpy got the start in net for St. Thomas, allowing three goals while making 25 saves. Torpy is now 17-3-1 on the season.

The Yellowjackets took one penalty for two minutes. St. Thomas took two penalties for four minutes. The Yellowjackets were 0-2 on the power play, while the Tommies were 0-1.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (9-10-5, 3-6-3 WIAC) is the regular season finale when they host Finlandia University Sunday, February 21. Game time from Wessman Arena is set for 11:00 a.m.
