Yellowjackets Victorious in Regular Season Finale

The Yellowjacket women's hockey team was in action Sunday morning when they took on Finlandia University in the regular season finale. The Yellowjackets were looking to build a little momentum in this game with the WIAC playoffs coming up.

After allowing an early goal to the Lions, the Yellowjackets settled down to go into the playoffs with a victory.

Finlandia, coming in on their third game in three days, took an early lead from the Yellowjackets in this matchup. Natasha Kern corralled the rebound and buried the ensuing shot to give the Lions a 1-0 lead at 1:57 in the first. Abby Gallaher and Kimberly Harter had the assists on the goal.

The Lion lead was short lived thanks to Lynne Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba). Larson scored her team leading 12th of the season at 2:43 to tie up the game at 1-1. Karen Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/Steinbach Regional Secondary) had the assist on the even strength goal.

The Yellowjackets took the lead for good at 11:26 in the first. Down a skater due to a Leah Elledge (Champlin Park, Minn./Champlin Park) penalty, the Yellowjackets put on the pressure in the Finlandia zone. It paid off, as Kelly Cockerill (Selkirk, Manitoba/Oak Park) jumped a pass right in front of the Lions goal and fired the shot into the net for her third goal of the season.

The Yellowjackets capped of their first period scoring flurry at 19:21 in the period. On the power play following a Finlandia interference penalty, the Yellowjackets found pay dirt when Emily Heid (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) netted her fifth of the season. Lynne Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba) and Abby Constant-Bercier (The Pas, Manitoba) assisted on the goal.

Finlandia managed to get one back in the second period to keep the Yellowjackets on their toes. At 12:40 in the period Hannah McCormick fired a shot, Finlandia's only of the second period, that beat Yellowjacket goaltender Sky Brown (Lenore, Manitoba/Virden Collegiate Institute) to cut the Yellowjacket lead to 3-2. Brock Nelson and Jazmine Miley assisted on the even strength goal.

The Yellowjackets put the game out of reach in the third period. First, Heid scored her second power play goal of the game at 4:58 in the period to put the Yellowjackets up 4-2. The second goal for the Yellowjackets came from Pamela McLeod (Gillam, Manitoba/Balmoral Hall Prep) at 17:27. McLeod's goal, her second of the season, was assisted by Lynne Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba).

Brown got the start in net for the Yellowjackets, allowing two goals while making 14 saves. She is now 6-4-1 on the season.

Taylor Gustafson started in net for Finlandia, allowing five goals while making 59 saves. Gustafson finishes the season at 0-16-0.

The Yellowjackets took two penalties for four minutes. Finlandia took four penalties for eight minutes. The Yellowjackets were 2-4 on the power play. Finlandia was 0-2.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (10-10-5, 3-6-3 WIAC) is a road trip to Stevens Point, Wis. Friday, February 26 to take on UW-Stevens Point in the first round of the WIAC playoffs. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
