Yellowjackets Fall in Rematch against Falcons

The Yellowjacket women's hockey team was in action Saturday when they played host to WIAC foe UW-River Falls. The last game for both of these teams saw the Yellowjackets pull off a stunning upset over the Falcons as they won 3-1 in River Falls.

The Yellowjackets weren't so lucky this time, as they fell to UW-River Falls 2-1.

Things started out extremely slowly for the Yellowjackets in this one. The first period saw the Yellowjackets constantly on the defensive, as the Falcons fired shot after shot on net. With the period nearly wrapped up UW-River Falls held an 18-1 advantage in shots, but the Yellowjacket defense held firm, keeping the score tied at 0-0.

That all changed at the 19:45 mark of the first. With the Yellowjackets on a power play, UW-River Falls Carly Moran was able to break the 0-0 tie. The shorthanded goal was Moran's 15th of the season. She got the assist on the goal from Chloe Kinsel.

The following two periods played out much the same way, with River Falls firing shot after shot toward the Yellowjacket net, and the Yellowjackets turning them all away. With just over one minute left in the game the Yellowjackets pulled their goaltender in favor of an extra skater. This move backfired as the Falcons Kinsel netted her 21st of the season at the 19:24 mark.

The Yellowjackets didn't just roll over in this one despite the two goal deficit. 15 second after the second UW-River Falls goal, at 19:39, Karen Larson (Blumenort, Manitoba/Steinbach Regional Secondary) cut the deficit in half with her sixth goal of the year. She was assisted on the goal by Amanda Coey (Brandon, Manitoba/Crocus Plains) and Saige Patrick (Steinbach, Manitoba/St. Mary's Academy). Unfortunately, that was all the offense the Yellowjackets could muster as they fell at home to UW-River Falls.

Sky Brown (Lenore, Manitoba/Virden Collegiate Institute) got the start in net for the Yellowjackets, allowing one goal while making 40 saves. Brown is now 5-3-1 on the season.

Angie Hall got the start in net for the Falcons, allowing one goal while making 19 saves. Hall is now 15-4-1 on the season.

The Yellowjackets took one penalty for two minutes. The Falcons took three penalties for six minutes.

The Yellowjackets were 0-3 on the power play. The Falcons were 0-1.

Next up for the Yellowjackets (9-8-4, 3-5-2 WIAC) is a home matchup Friday, February 12 against UW-Stevens Point. Game time from Wessman Arena is set for 7:00 p.m.
