Yellowjackets sweep Knox to split on day two in Ashland

The University of Wisconsin Superior picked up yet another sweep, defeating Knox (Ill.) College in straight sets at the Northland College Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Yellowjackets fell in straight sets against the University fo Wisconsin River Falls later Saturday in the team's final match-up in Ashland, Wisconsin.

UW-Superior (2-7) doused the winless Prairie Fire in short order, knocking off Knox (0-10) by scores of 25-18, 25-14, and 25-17. The Yellowjackets hit .320 as a team while holding the Fire to an .065 attack percentage on the day with 22 hitting errors compared to just nine for UWS. The Yellowjackets added six blocks while avoiding Knox's front line the entire match. Freshman outside hitter Brylee Colligan (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji H.S.) led the way with 11 kills, three service aces, and three blocks. Senior right-side hitter Alexis Landherr (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti H.S.) also had double-digit kills with 10 and played a role in two blocks. Freshman middle hitter Tawnee Jasan (New Prague, Minn./New Prague H.S.) was in for five blocks for UW-Superior.

Sophomore setter Emily VerWay (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley H.S.) had 34 assists to lead the Yellowjacket offense, which had five errors in the opening set and just four the rest of the way, hitting .429 in a dominant game two. She had four kills of her own and two service aces. Junior defensive specialist Mackenzie Dahlin (Kaukauna, Wis./Kaukauna H.S.) added a game-high 16 digs for UW-Superior.

UW-River Falls 3, UW-Superior 0
The Yellowjackets could not keep their positive momentum moving forward as UW-River Falls picked up a straight-set victory by scores of 25-21, 25-14, and 25-21. Outside of a strong-hitting second set for the Falcons, the teams were relatively even with defense controlling the first and third games.

River Falls averaged 15.7 digs per game on the match, while UW-Superior was not much worse at 13.7. Each team had four blocks. The Falcons were better on the serve, dropping in 11 aces and out-killed the Yellowjackets 39-29. Colligan had 10 kills to lead UWS, while VerWay had a double-double with a 21 assists and a team-high 13 digs to go with four service aces. Junior outside hitter Leah Nightingale (Dayton, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's H.S.) added three blocks in the match-up.

VerWay was named to the All-Tournament Team for her contributions to UWS, which was just one of three teams to leave the weekend with a positive point differential in four matches.

The Yellowjackets will finally make their way to Mortorelli Gymnasium on Tuesday evening when the team takes on Finlandia University in Superior. Opening serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
