Despite staking a 2-0 lead over St. Olaf College on Tuesday night, the University of Wisconsin Superior could not hold on as the host Oles stormed back to win in five sets. Earlier in the night, the Yellowjackets had fallen against Carleton College in four sets at the St. Olaf Triangular in Northfield, Minnesota.
UW-Superior (0-6) took the first two sets by matching 25-14 scores, led by the attack of freshman outside hitter
Brylee Colligan (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji H.S.), who totalled 18 kills on the night to lead the way for the Yellowjackets. UW-Superior had three runs of five consecutive points in the first two sets, but St. Olaf (5-0) turned their fortune around with four such runs in the third and fourth, victories of 25-16 and 25-12.
The fifth was a back-and-forth affair with an early 3-0 lead by the Yellowjackets that they would eventually extend out to 9-4 before the Oles once again rumbled back, knotting the score at 11-all. The two teams traded points to 14-14, but the home team claimed the final two scores and the victory. Megan Grimes had 17 kills to lead St. Olaf, while senior right-side hitter
Alexis Landherr (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti H.S.) (13) and junior outside hitter Leah Nightengale (10) each hit double figures for UW-Superior. Sophomore setter
Emily VerWay (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley H.S.) had 46 assists, while Colligan rounded out a double-double with a team-high 16 digs, matching junior defensive specialist
Mackenzie Dahlin (Kaukauna, Wis./Kaukauna H.S.).
Carleton 3, UW-Superior 1
Carleton College (5-0) knocked off the Yellowjackets in four to start the evening, winning the first two sets by a 25-17 score before UW-Superior battled back to win the third 25-19. Their rally was short-lived as Carleton took the fourth set 25-11. Attack errors cost the Yellowjackets throughout but particulary in the final set when they made 11 against the big blocking front from Carleton. The Knights knocked back 12 blocks on the night with Lucy Stevens playing a part in nine in the match.
UW-Superior hit just .028 in the match, but did see sophomore outside hitter
Ana Biscaia (Curitiba, Brazil/Colégio Positivo) and
Alexis Landherr (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti H.S.) hit double digit kills with 10 and 11, respectively. VerWay collected 32 assists while three different Yellowjackets had double-digit digs led by Colligan's 17. Carleton hit .261 as a team while collecting just 14 errors in the match.
