Monteiro's double-double not enough as UMD claims exhibition with Yellowjackets

A late 14-4 run by the University of Wisconsin Superior cut the deficit down to ten, but the Yellowjackets fell 66-56 to NCAA Division II University of Minnesota Duluth in exhibition action on Tuesday afternoon in Duluth.

Freshman forward Rafael Monteiro (São Paulo, Brazil/Santa Marcelina College) led all scorers with 21 points and 18 rebounds, one of just two players for either UW-Superior (2-11) or UMD (3-10) to crack double digits scoring. The Bulldogs led wire-to-wire, opening on a 12-0 run before the Yellowjackets broke the shutout with a free throw. UMD led by as much as 22 in the midway point of the second half. Sophomore guard Montroy Scott (Fridley, Minn./Columbia Heights H.S.) added nine points off the bench for UW-Superior while junior Jake Wilson led the Bulldogs with 10 points.

UMD shot 38.7 percent for the game while hitting 11-of-13 free throws in the second half to hold off the Yellowjackets' rally any further. UW-Superior shot 30.5 percent for the game, including 5-of-20 from three-point range. The Yellowjackets turned the ball over 16 times resulting in 19 points for the Bulldogs.
