‘Jackets downed by Cougars in final home game of 2017

Minnesota Morris 3, UW-Superior 0 | 25-14, 25-13, 25-14

SUPERIOR, Wis. (October 21, 2017) – The Yellowjackets faced the Minnesota Morris Cougars in their home game of the season, falling in three sets. It was Senior Day at the Mertz, three seniors and one junior: Katie Boone (Mindoro, Wis./Melrose-Mindoro), Mackenzie Dahlin (Kaukauna, Wis./Kaukauna), Leah Nightingale (Dayton, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) and Kaila Meyer (Brownsdale, Minn./Hayfield) were honored in their final home contests in a Yellowjacket uniform.

The 'Jackets fell in an early hole against the Cougars, 4-0, but Brylee Colligan (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) recorded the first Yellowjacket kill on an assist from Emily VerWay (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) to get within three. A kill from Nightingale, assisted by VerWay, would make the game 19-6 in favor of Morris, but Superior would score three straight from an error, a Mara Cameron (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) kill, assisted by VerWay, and a VerWay ace to make it 20-9 game. The Cougars would close the first set on top 25-14.

An error and two kills from Cameron, assisted by VerWay, would notch the first three points for Superior in the second set, down 8-3 early. Nightingale and Colligan would get kills, both assisted by VerWay, to make the game 14-6, but Superior would fall once again, 25-11.

The third set began with a 3-3 tie after a service error and attack error from the Cougars. Nightingale would added a kill, assisted by VerWay, to get within five at 10-5, and then the 'Jackets would get two back-to-back points at 16-8 and 16-9, from a Cougar error and then a Collgian kill from VerWay. Morris would eventually take the third set 25-14.

Cameron would lead the team with eight kills, while senior Nightingale finished with five. VerWay added 20 assists on the game, including an ace. Senior Dahlin had 17 digs in the match, while Boone had three, and Meyer one.

The Yellowjackets will make the trip to Ashland, Wis. to take on the Northland College Lumberjills, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m.
