UW-Superior 3, North Central 1 | 25-19, 28-26, 25-23, 25-17
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (October 27, 2017) – In their final UMAC game of the season, the Yellowjackets got the win against North Central University three sets to one.
Brylee Colligan (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) had a season-high 22 kills in the match, and added 14 digs for a double-double.
Superior got the 2-1 lead in the early exchanges after a Rams error, followed by Colligan getting her first kill of the night, assisted by
Emily VerWay (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) to go up 3-2.
Mara Cameron (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) would join in on the action at the 8-6 mark by getting a kill that was assisted again by VerWay. Superior would be down 16-17 midway through the set, but a tie at 17-17 after a service error from North Central would help the Yellowjackets to four straight points to go up 21-17. Colligan would end the match just as she started it, with a kill from Verway to take the set 25-19.
The second set would be tight all the way to the end. Superior would get the tie and lead after two kills from Colligan to make it a 24-23 game, but the Rams would come back to lead at 25-24. A kill from
Leah Nightingale (Dayton, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's), assisted by VerWay would get the lead at 26-25, but it wasn't enough as North Central scored three straight to get the set win.
In the third set, Cameron would help Superior to a 19-17 lead on a kill assisted by VerWay, and then Colligan would get the lead on a kill at 23-22. The Rams would call a timeout, but to no avail, as Superior took the third set on back-to-back kills from Nightingale and
Anna Ribich (Biwabik, Minn./Mesabi East), both assisted by VerWay, to win the set 25-23.
The fourth set showed some urgency from the Yellowjackets, as they jumped out to a 5-1 lead on a kill from
Megan Holz (Savage, Minn./Burnsville) from VerWay. They would continue to hold the lead to the final whistle as Colligan slammed her 22nd kill of the night to win the match.
VerWay finished with a season-high 49 assists on the night, which accounted for 88 percent of the total assists for Superior; she also added 14 digs, getting the double-double.
Anna Ribich (Biwabik, Minn./Mesabi East) added 13 kills on the evening, tying her career-high.
Karlie Leif (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) would play well defensively, getting 19 digs on the night.
Superior will play their final regular-season match of the year tomorrow afternoon at Hamline University, slated to start at 3 p.m.
