ST. PAUL, Minn. (October 4, 2017) – The Yellowjackets faced St. Kate's for the second time this season after suffering an early- season loss to the Wildcats. Superior came back with force and was able to sweep the Wildcats in three straight sets.
Superior fell in a small hole to begin the first set, going down 7-4, but soon scored seven straight points to go up 11-8. The team then went up 16-12 after a
Anna Ribich (Biwabik, Minn./Mesabi East) kill assisted from
Emily VerWay (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley). A few errors by the Wildcats would put Superior up 24-17, and
Brylee Colligan (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) would finish the set on a kill assisted by VerWay.
In the second set, the Yellowjackets were able to hold the lead after a
Mara Cameron (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) kill assisted by
Megan Holz (Savage, Minn./Burnsville) put them up 7-6. The set would get tight toward the end, as a Yellowjacket service error would bring St. Kate's within one, but a final error from the Wildcats would give Superior the second set, 25-23.
The third set was also tight until the Yellowjackets would break an 8-8 tie after a Colligan kill from Holz.
Leah Nightingale (Dayton, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) would stretch the lead out to 22-14 after a kill, and then Colligan would finish the set off once again on a kill from Holz.
Colligan would finish with a game-high 16 kills, and 20 digs.
Megan Holz (Savage, Minn./Burnsville) acted as the main setter for the 'Jackets, dishing out 26 assists on the night, while also provided 14 digs.
Superior will face UMAC opponent Bethany Lutheran this Saturday, Oct. 7, for a 3 p.m. home contest.
