'Jackets fall to Cougars in UMAC semifinal game

Minnesota Morris 3, UW-Superior 0 | 25-14, 25-12, 27-25

MORRIS, Minn. (November 1, 2017) – The 'Jackets faced the Minnesota Morris Cougars in the UMAC semifinal game on the road, and fell in three sets. This was the second game against the Cougars this year, and concludes the 2017 season for Superior.

Superior would open the first set down 6-3, but Mara Cameron made it 6-4 after a kill assisted by Emily VerWay. The Yellowjackets then found points at 13-7 on a Leah Nightingale, assisted by VerWay, and a Cougar error to make it 13-8. Morris would go on a run to open up the game 24-12, and Superior got a kill from Tawnee Jasan, assisted by VerWay, to make it 24-13, followed by another Cougar error to make it 24-14, but Morris would close out the set 25-14.

The second set was much of the same. Superior added two points on two errors from the Cougars to make the game 6-5 in the opening volleys, but Morris went on another run to open up their lead 15-5. Jasan would get another kill, assisted by VerWay, to cut the lead to eight at 16-8, but it wasn't enough as the Yellowjackets fell 25-12 in the second set.

The third set was much more interesting for the Yellowjackets. Superior would go up 5-4 on an error from Morris followed by a 4-0 run to make it 9-5 'Jackets after another kill from Cameron, assisted by VerWay. Superior would stretch their lead on another run to go up 17-8 after a kill from Elise Ertl, assisted by VerWay, and an another attack error from Morris. The Cougars would go on a run to make the 19-16, and then again to gain the lead at 23-22. A Brylee Colligan kill would tie at 24-24 and an attack error from Morris would make the game 25-25, but the Cougars pulled out the victory 27-25.

Jasan finished with a team-high seven kills on the night, while Colligan would add six kills and four digs to her line. VerWay added 21 assists to her season total. This game would be the last for seniors Nightingale and Mackenzie Dahlin as Nightingale added three kills and Dahlin had five digs from the libero position.

This loss concludes the 2017 Yellowjacket season, and their 18 wins and third place in the conference ties their 2015 inaugural season in the UMAC. Superior will look to keep improving in the offseason and prepare for the 2018 season.
