SUPERIOR, Wis. (November 2, 2017) – In their second meeting this season, the Yellowjackets faced the Northwestern Eagles in a game that would see two minutes of overtime and a 'Jacket win.
The Eagles came out of the gate firing, as
Dalton VonKaenel made a critical save in the opening minute.
Mualigbe Keita then found a chance in the 34th minute, but after his initial shot on goal, he was called offside, and his goal waived off. Â The 'Jackets would keep attacking and find the goal in the 27th minute.
Gunnar O'Neill-Sengbush flicked the ball in after a pass from
Blake Doyea and
Eric Watson found him in the middle of the box. Â
The Yellowjackets would hold the lead after the first half 1-0. Producing five shots to the Eagles three. Â
Superior continue to execute their attack plan, but the Eagles were able to find the equalizer in the 77th minute on a ball that rattled around in the box. VonKaenel would make two more critical saves for the 'Jackets to force overtime.
The teams traded passes to find an advantage in the opening minute of overtime, and Superior found theirs in the 92nd minute. Doyea burst up the middle of the field with the ball and was tackled at the 20-yard-line that gave a yellow card to Northwestern and a free kick to the 'Jackets.
Fernando Bicalho would line up a free kick at the 20 and bend the ball over a wall of Eagle defenders to the top-left corner of the goal and score the game-winner for Superior. The Yellowjacket bench erupted and rushed the field to meet Bicalho, the 'Jackets won 2-1.
Superior would produce 11 shots on the game, just one more than the Eagles' 10; Superior would also out kick Northwestern from the corner 9-6. VonKaenel would play all 92 minutes for the Yellowjackets, making five saves on the day.
Superior will make the short trip across the bridge this Saturday, Nov. 4 to face the No. 1 seeded St. Scholastica Saints in the UMAC Championship at 1 p.m.
